It is a relatively dangerous city that is blessed with a rich history.
I recommend thoroughly checking out the following site to learn more about its past: The IBEX Archive

very interesting thank you.
I wanted to go to Belleville IL yesterday and took the highway but by mistake exited too early and I found myself driving in East St. Louis without having planned it... It was like going in the middle of a jungle, it started to feel strange, unfamiliar, then it was like being in the heart of it...remembering what I had read about it...deserted...streets, houses, fire... it looked like a ghost city, one that we only see in movies...
I was wondering why it was left as such as it could be a great area for investment... but apparently the area has been contaminated by some kind of chemicals so niehter the whites or the blacks should live there as it is dangerous for health...
however amongst the ghost houses and streets, I saw a school and a church that seemed to still be functioning, some kids running about and there were a bit of traffic but not much, a police car, and some adults here and there running about too... not much, but there is life in this abandonned area... and sometimes we can see a little house with some curtains, bizarre...
I could not believe I had make this mistake... I heard so many horrible stories about it. But nothing happened to me, and somehow, I'd like to go back to understand better.

What I know about it... You shouldn't drive through it unless you have to.

well I made a mistake...I am new in St Louis, or almost, don't know everywhere yet and with all those work road, I misunderstood my GPS...so the GPS recalculated the route and must have taken a short cut through it...
it was first a weird feeling of gradually going somewhere different... then I saw those single buildings in deserted space looking like burned or even all locked up, their windows and doors... a few people around looking at the cars passing by, and a few drivers but not many at all, even a police car... but, it did not look dangerous as such, I think I was making my own movie in my mind... what was scary was the state of that street and it felt like it lasted ages. A bit scary to stop at the stops though...
I should not but I am still alive so is it really true all these stories that it is dangerous? They should reconstruct it.
I'll get the book mentioned, thank you.

It could have been worse... You could have gone through Washington Park instead.

And to think that at one time it was a nice place..... my dad was born there and would tell stories about how nice it was when he was a child.
