Default Moving to St Louis in May

Hi everyone, Me and my wife are moving to St louis in May and wanted some advice regarding safe areas to live(rent) in St louis. My wife will be working from Barnes-jewish hospital and I will start graduate school at wash U. I am looking for a safe and diverse neighborhood. I am not looking for fancy apartments, but something in range of 700-800 dollars. Any advice will be helpful.
Gaurav

Do you prefer to be closer to Barnes-Jewish or closer to Washington University?

Looking at Craigslist, you can probably find some decent apartments in Central West End. I've also seen apartments in Forest Park Southeast.

Between Barnes-Jewish and Wash U are some other neighborhoods: Wydown-Skinker, DeBaliviere Place, Skinker-DeBaliviere, Hi-Pointe, Clayton-Tamm, Franz Park (the last 3 neighborhoods make up Dogtown, which is not an official neighborhood), Cheltenham, and Kings Oak. The Hill is just south of Kings Oak and Cheltenham. And East of Central West End is Midtown.

Some of these areas (such as Dogtown) may also have houses for rent, if that's what you would prefer (rather than an apartment).

Well, when I think of what you are seeking, especially atmosphere, my first thoughts would be Central West End near work if you can find what you like at your price point. My next thought would be U.City or Tower Grove South or near there.

You can explore past threads and posts in terms of specifics about these areas in terms of the criteria you seek, and then ask more specific questions at that point.

You may want to also look at Downtown or Soulard. Downtown has some nice loft condos and Soulard is a walkable vibrant neighborhood with single fam homes and condos. Both are close to work.
