Default From Memphis to St. Louis?

After completing my graduate degree in Memphis, TN its time for me to relocate and fight for employment and a prospective job opportunity presented itself in Downtown St. Louis, MO recently. I haven't been to St. Louis at all but I have heard some interesting things about the area.

1) Where is a good area for a single, 20 something male to live (I'd prefer downtown so I could walk/bike to work, and I'd assume that the bar scene is better downtown)?

2) Any other tips or recommendations (Pros/Cons) that may aid me in my decision to relocate to St. Louis over another location such as Hartford would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for any and all of your help!

Washington Ave. Loft District downtown, Central West End or Soulard would be the three neighborhoods I would suggest checking out first. There are many great neighborhoods, but those are the three biggest "destination" neighborhoods and will offer the most amenities as well as allow you to bike, walk or take the metro (light rail) to work.

You can do a search of the forums for more information on those three neighborhoods -- you'll find a wealth of information.

If you want to live downtown, live on Washington Ave.

IMO, Downtown does not have the best bar scene though. There are 3 or 4 districts that I like better ... but you could not bike to downtown from any of them . You could take the metro though.

You would not be dissapointed in the least living on Wash Ave, however. I would if I were working downtown.

Good luck with the job opportunity. I would definitely visit Saint Louis first before moving. There are alot of great things about it and there are some not so great things about it. It will fit some people's taste and not others. It's definitely better than Memphis though .

I recommend university city or the South Grand area (by Tower Grove) at Arsenal and Grand. From both locations you can take our light rail, the Metrolink, downtown. Tower Grove offers a ton of fun recreational sports leagues..kickball, softball, flag football ....which is an easy and fun way to meet people. Both areas have a bunch of bars and other places to get out and see the town.

Good luck with your move.

The city as a whole has a ton to offer and I would recommend staying downtown since it is close to almost everything including your employer. I have lived downtown for 2 years and love every minute of it. There is a wide variety of bars and clubs in the are ranging from techno places, irish pubs, to your regular hole in the wall establishment. The nightlife scene is probably the best if not one of the best in the city. From Lacledes Landing, Washington Ave, and the ballpark are you have a ton to choose from. Plus you will save somenice cash from the lack of commuting.
