Enough is Enough!
St. Louis smoking ban continues to move ahead — maybe | Political Fix | STLtoday
 "Maybe?!?!?"
I am sick and tired of these worthless, self-absorbed politicians who refuse to get involved in helping to bring our great city into the 21st century! What is the Major Malfunction here? Are they being bribed by owners of run-down dumps who allow the same COPD/Emphysematic regular patrons in over the past 30 years to pollute the air with their carcinogenic crap? They are afraid to tackle any issue of significance. I have lived in the city all my life and I am tired of having to go to Ballwin to enjoy an evening out without smelling the garbage eminating from extremely stupid people who cannot read a warning label or can't give up their smokes.
New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Denver - have ALL banned smoking indoors. All are world class cities. I think St. Louis should be included in this category, don't you?
Get involved!
Smoke-Free St. Louis City
The effect on revenue is a illogical myth. Non-smokers out-populate smokers almost 3-1 in St. Louis. Let's get the majority to make a statement to our City government, and clear up our air for our families and loved ones!
Get on the horn and, like Truman said, "Give 'em Hell!"
City Government Contacts
Thank you!

Eh. I'm often weary of Government getting involved in stuff like this.
Yes, sitting next to a smoker in a restaurant is annoying.
However, if the restaurant has a completely walled off smoking area away from the regular eating area, then I don't care.

I'm curious how much time you guys have spent in smoke-free establishments in smoke-free cities? You may not realize how much difference it makes, and how overwhelming it is to walk into a room filled with a cloud of smoke once you're used to non-smoking places. I'm all for banning smoking in public places.

Couldn't be happier that St. Louis and Missouri still understands the rights of business owners.
If you have lived in the city all your life I guarantee you have absorbed many more carcinogens from car exhaust and air pollution than from second-hand smoke.

The issue for me is economic. St. Louis city can't afford to go smoke free if the county does not. What's to stop people who want to smoke in bars or restaurants from driving just over the city limits to spend their dollars there?
Alderman Lyda Krewson is sponsoring a bill that would make the city smoke-free, provided St. Louis county passes the same. I'm all for that. FYI: there are several bars/restaurants in the city that are have voluntarily gone smoke free. The Royale, on S. Kingshighway, is one. And they're packed any given night of the week. And as a smoker myself (although trying to quit ), I simply walk outside to the great patio in the back if I want to smoke. My non-smoking husband loves it.

I'm a recent transplant to the city and I have to say that I was very surprised (and disappointed) to see smokers in bars and restaurants. I ask for non-smoking areas, of course, but often have to walk through smoke-filled sections or sit close enough to floating carcinogens that I still feel uncomfortable.
I do know that the first smoking ban I witnessed (in a city I lived in nearly 10 years ago) met much opposition from business owners but in the end I think resulted in better environments for business owners and customers. I know this is a sensitive situation due to the county/city relationship here. But I'd like to believe that more people like myself would stay *away* from the county and stay in the city if we knew all the city bars and restaurants would be more comfortable and healthy places to visit.

It's a health issue, not a business rights issue. The same argument against is one of potential loss of revenue, but that of course hasn't been an issue in the endless other places. It'll happen in St. Louis, many years too late, but it'll happen.
