In the early 1900's St. Louis was one of the 5 top big cities in the U.S. Bigger than L.A. at the time. Much of LA's growth came in the 20th century anyways though. At one time St. Louis name was in the likes of New York, Chicago and such.

Up until the 1950's I believe St. Louis was in the top 10 or maybe top 15.
