St. Louis as an area is not dangerous at all. Certain neighborhoods are dangerous to be on foot in or live in but probably not just to drive through. You do need to be careful where you move to around st louis, but you do not need to avoid moving here at all. St. Louis is incredibly safe compared to many cities around the world I've been in. Go to Tijuana and Juarez for a few weeks each then come back and tell me how dangerous lil ol st louis really is. Americans are unrealistically afraid of everything but the leading cause of death (cardiovascular disease). Better sell the TV and video game console and get some exercise if you want to live a long time.
