I'll post again because I have recently assured myself how great this neighborhood is: Central West End by a pretty substantial margain.

Well it's not considered the city but I love Webster Groves/Kirkwood area. Webster has some beautiful old homes. I grew up in Glendale and wow did I have a picture perfect all American childhood. I don't even think I could afford to live in Glendale anymore. LOL.

Instead of posting an official neighborhood of the city or one of the most popular, I'll drop the secret of my little urban paradise St. Louis-style.
That would be the Compton Hill/Reservoir Square sub-neighborhood of the Compton Heights area.
It's located in the shadow of the beautiful Compton Hill Water Tower, and you've probably never seen it unless you know someone who lives there...or you're a curious architectural explorer as I am.
Here are the only photos I could find of this hidden gem:
Of course, these non-streetscape shots don't do it justice. The neighborhood just defines "quaint".

No, he's actually right. CWE is the only neighborhood in St. Louis city that has a bustling, urban vibe to it. The population density of those neighborhoods you've named is decent, but nothing compared to truly urban American cities like San Francisco and New York, both of which have population densities at least twice as high as those neighborhoods listed (and keep in mind, the SF and NY numbers are for the ENTIRE city).

Old North St. Louis, followed by any number of the neighborhoods already listed here.

So you know I like the Central West End, but I want to give a shot out to Tower Grove South, which is probably the most urban neighborhood in St. Louis.
A few days ago, I was walking around the Tower Grove South area along South Grand with a friend. Of course I noticed the high population density and the many ehtnic and international stores and restaraunts, but I also noticed the incredibly diverse population. Frankly, the neighborhood reminds me of San Francisco in a way (diversity, population density, urban feel). I kind of joked to my friend that every single person I saw was either gay, ghetto, or Asian.
I feel a lot better now.

Would you actually enjoy living in a city with a population density that high. No privacy, no backyards, too much traffic and not many larger individual housing units doesn't really sound like much fun (although, everyone has a different opinion).
