Having looked on Realtor and Trulia amongst others, I was struck by the number of homes for sale that are unoccupied and appear renovated.

In the UK you would find perhaps 1 in 10 homes for sale being vacant, perhaps even fewer.
Looking for homes in STL County it appears 9 out of ten are empty.

Why so many in the US, and why do so many have recent upgrades and remodelling/landscaping?

It would depend on where you are looking at. Some of the vacancies are due to the mortgage crisis we have been having and some people have had their homes foreclosed on. However, the housing bubble did not hit St. Louis nearly as hard as other areas. Most of the homes that you are referring to are probably flippers/renevators/speculators that are betting on the increased attraction to St. Louis city that has been on the rise since the turn of the century. Old homes that have been sitting vacant in the city for so long are now getting bought up and renovated, which is the reason why so many 1900s brick townhomes have competely new interiors.
