You are smokin crack if you think Poughkeepsie has more to do then STL that doesn't include making the 1.5 hour drive to NYC.

all depends on what you consider as things to do. I'm not bored here by any means, and maybe I just more familiar with the hudson river valley. But so far I haven't found anything in Saint Louis (besides major league sports, and big museums) that Poughkeepsie can't match.

As far as new york city goes, I said it was close enough by metro to enjoy real big city activities. Because the NY METRO manages to run all the way up to Poughkeepsie (70 miles), The StL "Metro" doesn't even run more than 25 miles outside the city.

Yeah man you tell them...St. Louis you suck because you aren't New York City!!! Be right back guys, I'm going to head over to the Lincoln Nebraska forum and whine about how it is smaller and has less to do than Paris.

Dont even bother responding to that guy. I like to read the responses on this forum from time to time and it appears that he has a post on every thread along the lines of "I used to live elsewhere and this place sucks." Its really not worth your time to retort.

So, back to the OP's original subject...

Positives: a unique feel that is not found anywhere else in the US...you really cant pin down St. Louis to being a particular "type" of city. Not big, not small, a little southern, a little northern, classy, laid back, etc. Probably my favorite thing to do here is go to the Soulard Farmer's Market. If you haven't been, do you self a favor.

Negatives: honestly, the only thing that drives me crazy is the negative attitude that many have here. Quick bickering and find something you enjoy.

The bottom line is that if you work more than a few hours a day, you cannot exhaust the opportunities that exist here. When I lived in Chicago, I truly enjoyed as much as I could, but I also worked all day. So, its not like I was at a play one day, the game the next, then sailing Lake Michigan thereafter. If you like mountains, deserts, or large bodies of water, then I dont have a solution for you. I suppose you could move? What a concept!

I found the things I like here: golf, running at Forest Park, going to the Hot City Theatre, eating out, ball games, etc. But, I also live in the city. It would be difficult to take advantage of those things if I were in a far out suburb. If I had a trust fund, maybe I would be bored with all the time on my hands? Just my opinion, feel free to bash me....I can take it.

I really haven't found anything southern yet about St. Louis...the accent alone is very un-southern. St. Louis feels like the Midwest to me...definitely a lot more northern then were I grew up in southern Missouri. But yes, it is classy, laid back, and even redneck in some areas....I really like the variety myself.

I had my first run-in with a negative St. Louis attitude a few days ago. I was telling this lady I recently moved here from Austin, and her exact response was "wow, it must have sucked to move here from Austin!" I explained to her that yes, Austin is cool, but St. Louis is too. Luckily, most other St. Louisans seem to have more civic pride or are simply ambivalent about the area.

World class universities and colleges

Minuses
The fact that I am still here in Floriduh

I you think I'm just trolling, I would have been long gone by know. I'm your worse nightmare - the reality check. All I said is that I can do many of the same things that you find so "unique" to St. Louis in a very small town like Poughkeepsie, NY - and you guys get so defensive - this it what drives me nuts and is one of this region's worse traits. Maybe it is because of the regions French Heritage that you act like the French: You possess empire mentality, without the empire.

Yes, I would rather be somewhere else. I can't move. But I bought a home and live here now, and have learned to embrace thew suck. Fortunately I live in a community that doesn't possess much of the parochialism that is way to abundant throughout the rest of the region.

Yes St. Louis has many fine attributes, as you all know, but I have not found anything here (besides the arch) that would make this region truly "unique".

I've lived in Monterey, CA, Hartford, CT, Oklahoma City, and the DFW region for a brief time. It's fine that you think St. Louis does not have anything unique to offer - you're entitled to any opinion you wish - but most of the transplants that I've spoken with, myself included, HAVE been pleasantly surprised by the culture in St. Louis and how much it has to offer. In fact, I've found that typically it is the transplants who can really appreciate St. Louis. I'm sure Poughkeepsie is wonderful (never been) but it seems sort of ridiculous to compare apples and oranges like that. I don't see St. Louis trying to imitate Poughkeepsie, nor vice versa.

And you really think that the arch is the only thing that makes this region truly unique? Come on. It's ridiculous comments like that which will get you branded a troll.
