relocating to area west of st. louis
My husband and I, both in our mid-50's, are moving soon and I will be working in Des Peres. However, I feel that area is out of our price range for housing. Would like to find an area where the houses aren't so close together that you have no privacy, but would also like to be in a nice, friendly community. Any advice would be helpful. We are dog lovers also and need a sizable yard.

You should be able to get something within driving range for less than 500,000. I don't know how much yard you are willing to give up to save $$$, though. Really you could get a starter home for around 250,000 but it probably will have a very small yard.
If your job doesn't pay enough for you to afford a house there, I would consider finding a different job or asking for more money.

In general, the further West you go, the larger the house and yard for the same price. This will, however, put you further from the city. You may want to check out the homes in the areas just South. Very nice suburban areas for lower prices.

That's true in the case of going west of the Missouri River into St Charles County, that being said you are more likely to get more house for your money going North or South over West, if within St Louis County limits

I grew up in Des Peres, and my parents still live there.
You might be surprised at the diversity in housing options there - if you look hard enough, you might find exactly what you're looking for. It's not all mansions, by any means.

I agree with DeBalivere. There is a section of houses in Creve Coeur off Mason Road (by Bellerive Elementary) that have close to .5 acre lots and are priced in the anywhere from 250,000-350,000. Look at this one..for example. 12130 Ladue Heights Dr, Creve Coeur, MO, 63141 - MLS ID#90019261 - Single Family Home real estate - REALTOR.com®
Creve Coeur is a great area and would be an easy drive to Des Peres.
