I'm particularly looking at the 2300 block of Russell Street. Any advice about the area? Would I be safe as a young recent college grad and 2 room mates around my age (22)?

I would consider McKinley Heights a safe area, that block of Russell is just fine. Plus, you are right down the street from Soulard. If you are in your 20's, Soulard is the place to be. I would also look in the Central West End, Downtown and The Loop.

... You could also try Tower Grove South, which also has a pretty good urban, artsy, young college grad vibe.
