I should have posted this when I saw your post...CNN Money has a cost of living calculator...
Cost of living: Compare prices in two cities - CNNMoney.com
I know nothing about Nebraska, so I did some searching and saw that Lincoln is about 60 miles from Omaha.
For Omaha;
The median household income in 2007: $45,170 (it was $40,006 in 2000)
For Lincoln;
Estimated median household income in 2007: $47,358 (it was $40,605 in 2000)
Being as they are very similar in median incomes, I compared a $50,000 salary in Omaha to a $50,000 salary in St Louis.
According to the Cost of Living Calculator, if you make $50,000 in Omaha, you should expect to make or need to make $51,395. A very small difference.
It says;
Groceries will cost 10% more
Housing will cost 5% more
Utilities will cost 3% more
Transportation will cost 0% more
Healthcare will cost 2% more
