Other posters have mentioned current China cargo hubs in cities like Chicago. Are there other current hubs set up in the United States that mirror the cargo hub that could be set up in St. Louis? If so, what effect has the cargo hub actually had on those cities and how many businesses, warehouses and jobs has the cargo hub actually created. How many Chinese companies actually invested and set up shop in those regions?
Just wondering if the possibilities being touted are actually going to become reality if this thing goes through. Would the cargo hub in St. Louis be different from others in the U.S. What, if anything, makes the hub in St. Louis unique, besides central location and underutilized major airport?

Sure, I'll respond to you on both forums Dogtownbnr....

I think what was pointed out is that Chicago and Dallas both have China cargo flights already. However, those cities do NOT have 'official Chinese HUB' status. St. Louis would the HUB for chinese cargo airlines servicing the Midwest.

I don't think anyone knows really knows how big this will get. It's just too early to tell. Hell, it may take decades to realize the full potential.

I'm anxious to hear what comes to light when the official announcement is made in a few weeks. It's likely that we won't see much, if anything, change in the short term.

Is this finally the time our regional and state leaders get 'props' from the general public?

UPS in Louisville and FEDEX in Memphis.
What is being set up by the Chinese will turn into a competitor of both UPS and FEDEX.

Unless the Chinese have plans to redevelop a former military base in the area, I do not think Lambert (or any other area in StL Metro) has the room for growth as this: Global Access at Southern California Logistics Airport - Home Page
Any consideration for an regional hub to operate 24/7/365 need to be aware of noise and/or environmental abatement issues.
Another caveat: the jobs that were supposedly going to be created by SCLA never materialized as promised.

^ You're right.

However, this is a caloboration between St. Louis City, St. Louis County, St. Charles County, and St. Clair County. Warehousing, logistic centers as well as regional and North American HQ's would not be limited to the 550 acre NorthPark. The would be spread out between the 4 counties, with the white collar jobs locating primarily in both downtown Clayton and downtown StL as well as the job centers in McKee's planned $8.1 Billion, 1500 sq acre NorthSide redevelopment plan. Theoretically, at least

China names airline to start Cargo Hub talks

Quote:
The region's three-year push to land a Chinese cargo hub at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport took big step forward Wednesday morning when that nation's aviation authority named an airline to negotiate flights.
China Eastern will begin talks with Lambert about regularly scheduled flights from Pudong, to begin in the first half of this year, said Mike Jones, chairman of the Midwest China Hub Commission. A team from the airline is planning to visit St. Louis next month.
The decision, by the Civil Aviation Administration of China, does not directly lead to flights - negotiations could yet stall. But, after three years of talks between St. Louis-area business and civic leaders and the Chinese government, it is a clear breakthrough, Jones said.
"This has been a long process, but we anticipate it will be relatively short negotiations," Jones said. "Basically, this is the kind of breakthrough moment we've been working towards."
The news comes sooner than expected. As recently as Tuesday, Jones said he expected word to come after Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit to the U.S. But it is quite welcome, he said.
"Now the real work begins," said Jones.
----------------
China will begin cargo flights to Lambert St. Louis International Airport, according to Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) in a Twitter message this morning. The senator said the flights will boost opportunities for Midwest agriculture and manufacturing.
The China cargo flights were also confirmed independently by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
St. Louis has been courting cargo flights at Lambert for several years. At the end of 2010, a delegation of St. Louis area executives and officials, including McCaskill and former Sen. Christopher "Kit" Bond (R-Mo.) traveled to China to meet with Chinese airlines and aviation officials about launching the hub
