No, it is not a boring city. Basketball culture is severely lacking. If you like baseball or soccer though, this is the city for you. They do have the Rams too for football.

There's a big hockey community here too. St. Louis is a big sports city, with three professional teams, numerous smaller teams, college teams, and high school rivalries. In other respects, such as live music, outdoor recreation, museums, and art, St. Louis also has plenty of things to do. Just look at any local events calender whether it be the Riverfront Times, Metromix, the Post or other.

I've been here 6 years and I've never been bored. Always something to do when it comes to art, music, sports and festivals.

There should be either a "hell no" or "only if you yourself are incredibly boring" buttons.

I think most all US teenagers think their suburb is boring. St. Louis is a great sports town.

Never found it to be boring, especially if you like bars, casinos and baseball.

but I've been back in SoCal on assignment for the last month and I can tell you that it is much more exciting and diverse out here (and I'm in the burbs of orange county).

^ There are also a lot more people out there. Generally, more people = more diverse activities, because more activities have people to sponsor and participate in them.

I don't think St. Louis is boring. Of course, I live in a boring small town myself.

I don't think there's a lack of basketball culture. Why would you say its lacking by the way?

The fact is St Louis is a SportsTown with 3 teams, so any discussion of basketball is naturally going to get buried beneath Rams Cardinals and The Blues. If there were a professional team here, St Louis being the SportsTown it is, would give them their fair share of attention. Best fans in baseball, Blues fans, I don't know anything about them but they're 8th in attendance. Rams fans have been very loyal during this rough patch as well. St Louis roots for its teams, you put a competitive NBA team in Scottrade Center and they'll match the fervor of any longstanding NBA city. Some will argue though about whether or not we can do that for 41 nights (that's another discussion).

The reason you don't bump into any basketball culture is because St Louis is socially segregated. There are 22 public basketball courts in north St Louis. Four in South St Louis. http://stlouis.missouri.org/citygov/parks/parks_div/facilities/basketball.html
Have you ever been warned to not go north of delmar?

Your perceived lack of basketball culture in actuality is the segregated social scene in St. Louis.

St Louis doesn't really have a social scene with a mixed crowd. There are pockets, here and there are moments. President Obama's rally underneath the Arch, or Jay-Z at Scottrade Center. The common thing there is a younger generation. However, despite that, those moments still exist in a vacuum.

There's little effort made, and there's little opportunity presented to socialize with people of different backgrounds, and if its in particular socializing about basketball its further compounded by having 3 teams already and no basketball team. You're not going to have a lot of people from south St. Louis going to north St. Louis to play on any of the 22 public courts there.

A lot of our best basketball players come from prep schools, oddly enough. Larry Hughes went to CBC. David Lee Chaminade. Both reputable basketball programs. Its not Rucker park and its only 4 years old but There's 3 on 3 basketball tournaments in North St Louis. There's culture here. We had the Hawks '58 NBA Champions, and JoJo White of the Celtics is from St Louis. Whenever St Louis has had a preseason NBA game its always sold well 17,000+. The highest attendance at Scottrade was the Missouri Valley Conference tournament, at 22,000.

What were you expecting in terms of culture?

How can you call a city bustling with Catholic Fish Fries boring? :-)

Boring? No, certainly not.
Exciting? No, not really, in comparison to many other cities we've been too. But there are things to do.

Somewhere in the middle is an apt description.

Blues Hockey is the best game in town.
We don't care about baseball (boring, half of them are dopers), but St. Louis is probably one of the top five baseball cities in the country.
Great running and cycling scene here.
Soccer is popular.

St. Louisians are generally sissies when it comes to winter/colder temperatures, but the hibernation does end and they come out when it warms up. There are many great local bands. We used to see the excellent Cavo all the time before they became popular.

Several great beer festivals (with REAL beer, not the swill from ABInBevSABMillerMolsonCoors) are held throughout the year.
