I'm thinking about taking a job downtown. Commuting everyday would be a hassle though. I don't know anything about the metrolink system and what neighborhoods are close to it. I'd like to live closer to my job but don't know if living downtown would suit me. Are there any neighborhoods close that would be a good option? Still trying to learn this city, thanks.

Soulard. Just a mile south of downtown. Its safe, fun, and has great vibe. Downtown is great place to work. Much more iteresting than the cookie cutter offices in the suburbs.

MetroLink can be a great option--my office is pretty much next door to a stop, and it sure beats $5/day parking in the attached garage.

Commuting downtown is easy as pie. I can take the bus, ride my bike, take the train, or drive. There are a ton of 2 dollar and even 1 dollar lots if you know where to look and don't mind walking a little bit. But I much prefer alternatives to driving, and I love getting to avoid highways, especially 270!

I agree with BoomBoxing, commuting into and out of downtown is relatively easy unless you are crossing the PSB into IL. Getting into Clayton is more of a headache, fewer commuting options and lots of traffic.

I don't know anything about the metrolink though. Do I have access to it from any neighborhood?

When I was there a month ago, there was an impending vote on raising taxes to support the Metrolink, and I want to say it passed.

From the map, it sure looks as though the Clayton area would be a desirable one to live in, if one were to consider the construction of the new line. Will that line go as far as I-44?

The map Moorlander posted is a bit out of date. The line extending south to Shrewsbury has been completed since 2006 and is right next to I-44. Also, Prop A to support the Metrolink/bus system passed with a big majority last month.

Clayton is considered a very desirable location and is kind of like a mini downtown with a fair amount of shops, restaurants, and bars.
