Hey y'all.

I'm from Kentucky and I'm graduating college in December. I'm hopefully going to be able to grad school at Washington University, but that won't start till the fall of next year. In between December 2010 and August/September 2011, I am going to be without work for at least some of the time and that scares me.

What is the job market like in St. Louis? I will have a BA in Child and Family Studies (my school's name for social work), but I know just the BA isn't too wonderful in terms of employment...which is why I'm pursing my MSSW at Washington U. If I don't get accepted into Washington U for grad school, then I plan to just work and apply again the following year.

Anyway, I'm really hoping I can move out there for school but I'm worried about finding a job and housing. I am a single 25 year-old male with small animal pets (the kind that live in cages, no dogs/cats).

I have a dear friend in Belleville IL who is crazy (in a good way) and offered to let me stay with her but she has three young kids and if I can help it at all I don't want to use up her resources.

I know this post is kinda general and you probably get these all the time, but I've never been to St. Louis and I want to get a feel for what "real people" who live there have to tell me. I am open to any and all comments.

I hope y'all are well!

Peace,
Jack

You won't have a hard time finding housing. There are a ton of cheap apartments around the city. As for job, start looking now. I suggest you start looking into all the area hospitals and agencies.

Housing won't be an issue as you will find a plethora of nice places all throughout the area to suit whatever lifestyle you desire. Employment can be a bit harder to come about for someone fresh out of college. Employers here tend to emphasize experience over education and some employers can be quite unfriendly to those with little/no experience.

That being said, you have a lot of time to research and see whats out there. Friends of mine with BS's in Social Work have found jobs but it took them several months of trying. I guess it goes without saying, but they tend to leave a bit to be desired for salary (probably true of SW everywhere), but once you get your MSW you will be set.

The good news is that there are a ton of non profits in the area and local government/state agencies who hire plenty of social workers. My advice is that once you are about to come here to apply plenty and often. You will find something soon enough. Good luck!

Thanks, yall. I really appreciate your helpfulness!

I am reading through this whole forum and preparing myself. I'm glad I found this place.

A couple people have raised concerns about the crime rate in St. Louis. Is this really an issue?

I lived briefly in DC, where the crime rate (murders, robbery, etc) was really high, so I can't imagine St. Louis would be any worse?

Crime is an issue here like pretty much any other city. The crime heavy areas are pretty easily avoidable. In terms of employment, the unemployment rate is a little higher here than the national rate right now I think. Most of my social work friends have jobs, though.
