I had a '96 Legacy Outback wagon that expired of rust last spring with over 230k on the odometer. I now have a '03 legacy Outback wagon with under 90 k miles. When it finally dies I will get another. I like the way they drive on snow and slush covered roads with four new snow tires. I have also seen a wrecked Subie that had been rolled at 65+ mph into the trees and the occupants were able to open the doors and get out.
I guess my favorite model is the forester since that's the only one I ever drove on a regular basis. It really was the perfect small wagon that could carry a lot. I had an older smaller version, the new ones are almost a completely different vehicle.
I almost bought a 2013 impreza but am glad I passed. The base models had unbelievably awful interior fabric and the upper trims were expensive for what you got. I paid almost the same for a new mid size sedan as I would have for the only impreza I liked at that dealership. IMO the impreza commands a premium just for the awd.

AWD does cost more, other than Subarus what other full-time AWD sedan cost under $30k? None.
There are lots of cars out there advertises AWD but only engages when it detects slip and cannot send more than 40% of power to the rear. Most of those cars uses AWD for safety not for performance.

Mitsubishi Lancer is about the only real competition to the Legacy in North America

In what way is a compact car without AWD any kind of competition to the mid-size AWD Legacy? The Lancer Evolution is in direct competition with the WRX STI, but that's a different story altogether.
It's no competitor to the Legacy but the Lancer SE trimline is AWD and a competitor to the base Impreza while the Ralliart goes head to head with the WRX. That said the entire Lancer lineup is in desperate need of a complete overhaul.

Right, that's all fine, except the SE is a bit more expensive than the base Impreza, although from an equipment-adjusted standpoint, they might be close. But to say that the Lancer competes with the Legacy is to give the Lancer way too much credit. As far as the Ralliart competing with the WRX... The Focus ST, VW GTI and MazdaSpeed3 compete with the WRX despite neither one of those cars being AWD. The Ralliart barely sells a thousand a year - it's not much of a competitor. Plus, isn't it DCT-only?
As far as Lancer being in a need of an overhaul - amen to that. Mitsubishi as a company is in a severe need of an overhaul.
The Ralliart may not be a sales competitor to the WRX. But on the road and track it certainly is. The former situation might have been improved if Mitsubishi had bothered to market the damned thing.
I didn't even know that mitsubishi still made cars. I'm not even joking. I can't think of the last time I saw one.
