For an all electric plug in 4WD it will take a lot of research and development, but the Subarus are selling so well already there isn't the motivation. Here in WA state it's by far the most popular brand by DOL licensing data. Ford tried AWD hybrid with the Escape from 2005-11, and gave up when sales were poor.

Not sure how hard it would be to build an electric AWD Subaru. My Lexus RX400h AWD has electric motors, one for each rear wheel, and it works great. I'd love to see an Outback with a similar setup, even if they just start out with a strong hybrid. Although my current Outback gets great mileage, if I could get 10-15 more city MPG I'd be willing to pay for it.
