Is there any talk about the towing capacity on the 2020 Forester's? It's the only thing giving me doubts about buying one. Right now the 2019 can only tow 1,500lbs... that's less than a PRIUS! Pathetic.

Unless they offer the offer the 2.4T which has a 3500lb towing capacity on the 2020 Outback (5000lb with the Ascent) you are stuck. CVTs and unibody construction is generally not going to yield a high towing capacity.

Yep, if you want more generous towing, get the Outback (up to 3500lb with the turbo). Forester will tow an aluminum skiff or a small teardrop camping trailer, but that's about it.

It's curious that in other markets, Europe and Australia for example, the towing capacity is much higher. No idea why. DOT rules of some kind? I'm guessing the CVT may be part of the problem.

Outback with the 3,500lb limit has a CVT also, but maybe that's been beefed up. It could also have beefed up rear springs and shocks, stronger rear structure.

For what it's worth, although I wish it had more towing capacity too, 1,500lb is common in the compact SUV segment, RAV4 and CR-V are the same.

The 2020 also has a 1500 tow capacity. Owner of a 2019 model and the only capacity of my hitch: https://www.subarupartspros.com/sku/l101ssj200.html is 1500. I went back to that site to check for 2020 and there you go!

Likely the difference in the 2.5L tow capacities here is cooling and or braking capabilities, and not platform, transmission, etc. Go Outback if you want to tow more. 2.5L Outback 2700 lbs, 2.4T XT 3500.
