I am looking to buy a used car during the next few months, and I was thinking a Subaru might be a good idea. I am generally looking for something between 2004-2006 with lower mileage. My price range could be 10-15K Do you think the Subaru Impreza or Subaru Forester is a better pick? I would assume both cars are fairly reliable and get in the upper 20s MPG on the highway. I do like the fact that these cars have high safety ratings and side airbags.

Is the reliability good for these vehicles?

Just make sure you have a Subaru dealer nearby that can do the repairs on it when necessary. Many independent mechanics don't like to work on them and have a hard time getting parts.

I saw some great deals in ebay motors. I do know there are risks involved in online buying, but its worth at least looking to see what out there.

We have an 8 year old Subaru with almost 200K on it. Garage kept, it still runs like a dream. Best investment, reliable transportation we've ever owned.

Subaru dealers are fairly commonplace near where I live, and also in New England where I will be moving as well.

They are very reliable. I think recently they were ranked 3rd behind Honda and Toyota. I have an 03 Subaru Impreza WRX. Love it. 78K and I am not looking to get rid of the car. Forester is a wagon type so I am not sure overall if the dimensions give you a lot more room than the Impreza. The new Impreza got real good reviews. The Forester is a new design for the 2009 model year. They hold their value so a low mileage 04-06 is definitely in your range. I think their dealer network is fine. They are not a dime a dozen like a GM dealer but they are not obscure either. Good luck.

I have 2 Forresters. When son#2 got his license I passed the 99 with 160+ miles down to him and bought another. Has been very reliable. I love it in the snow. My local auto shop does all the work on mine. It has all been minor, so I don't have any good feedback for you about repair work except to say I haven't needed anything major. Sometimes I have to wait a day for a part because he has to order it. Nearest dealer is 60 miles away. Just ask your mechanic if he works on them.
Forrester Vs Impreza: I guess it just depends if you want a sedan or SUV. You do have the option of laying the seats all down in the back with the Forrester which is handy. That's why I have it. Although my son was really pushing for the WRX Oh, I bought the latest one on ebay too.

The new 2009 (3rd Generation) Forester is very nice.
