What are the best supplements out there for depression? Any negative side effects?

Well, supposedly St. John's Wort helps mild depression.

If you think this is more than temporary though you should see a doctor.

Make certain enough of the B vitamins are being accounted for be it through diet and/or supplements. Additionally consider looking into SAM-e. *** not recommended if manic-depressive/bipolar!

S-Adenosyl methionine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

SAM-e: Official site of Nature Made SAM-e.com. Discover your good mood.

If you are under the care of a physician and taking prescriptions for depression or anything else, check with your phycisian(s) and pharmacist about interactions/side effects.

I would talk to a nutritionist or your doctor. Add exercise into the mix also.

D3, B12, and get some sunshine daily if possible.

Have a daily routine. Humans need a routine, we are creatures of habit. If you are unemployed or retired and have nothing to do, this is depression waiting to happen. Make sure to have something to do - mentally and physically.

Take up a social/physical hobby like a walking club, badminton, chess club. Take classes for swimming, a musical instrument, fencing, dancing, etc.

All these behaviors will have a much more dramatic and long-lasting effect than any drug, without the side-effects.

Get a book called The Mood Cure where she talks about quite a few different supplements depending on which neurotransmitters you might be low on and you may even need a couple or more of different kinds, but the supps are good b/c they actually help you produce the NT, rather than just preserve them, as SSRIs do and after awhile you can go off of them. There is also a website where you can answer the questionnaires and determine what you're low on.

5-HTP is good for empty stomach at night or in the morning. Some swear by DME's more so than 5-HTP's.

Also naturally speaking, if you like banana, eat two a day. It should make a big difference. I'm not depressed but notice a different when I consistently eat them.

Aside from that look into adjusting your food intake including supplements. I generally take 5-HTP, fish oil and whole foods multi-vitamin on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. At breakfast I'll take CLA, EGCG and caffeine (200-400mg) which acts as an energy booster but also for mental clarity. See what works for you. As long as you're not consuming anything in large quantities you shouldn't have much of a side effect.

What is EGCG? DME's? And yes, I forgot to mention that my best mood boosters are fish oil, all the B-vitamins, and tyrosine. Also I"m better if I get enough protein, since that is what's needed to build the neurotransmitters.
