Here is a brief quote from an article titled, Heal Yourself With Sunlight (http://www.ener-chi.com/sunlight.htm - broken link) by Andreas Moritz.
The time when one's immediate natural impulse on the first sunny spring day was to get outside and enjoy it is long gone. Only the very courageous or "careless" who defy the grim warnings from medical mandarins and cancer specialists, wholeheartedly endorsed by the sunscreen industry, dare to venture forth into the "dangerous" sun. Unless they are covered head to toe with sun protection factor (SPF) 60, they gamble with their lives, or so they are made to believe, by those who serve their own vested interests. Fortunately, this view is beginning to crumble in the blatant absence of scientific proof that sunlight causes disease. What is being discovered instead is that lack of sun exposure is one of the greatest risk factors for disease. Very few people know that not getting enough sun kills 50,000 people from cancer deaths every year in the US alone. As shown later, these are deaths that are easily preventable through the Vitamin D produced by the body in response to regular sun exposure.....Andreas Moritz

I've read over the years about Antioxidants and foods high in certain Polyphenols protect from Cataracts.

Scientific basis for medical therapy of cataracts by antioxidants [published erratum appears in Am J Clin Nutr 1992 Jan;55(1):iv] -- Varma 53 (1): 335S -- American Journal of Clinical Nutrition

Default Vitamin D in the winter?

Ok, out of total curiousity... stupid question..maybe...

...do tanning beds help with Vitamin D too? Or just natural sunlight.

A great question New2Oro ........

Almost all Tanning Beds emit around 95% UVA and 5% UVB. It's the UVB that helps to induce Vitamin D in the body as the Sun has a more balanced spectrum of the UVA/UVB rays.

For someone who spends a lot of time outdoors in the sun (without sunscreen), why would it be that the body doesn't produce enough vit D? This person is 70, is deficient in Vit D and has to take 50,000 (mg) of Vit D once a week. Otherwise, very healthy for his age, has always taken daily balanced vit supplements, antioxidants, eats well (very little junk food), lots of cheeses. Why would this person NOT be making his own Vit D in sufficient quantities?

Well none of us could know as we are not doctors but there are several different reactions that have to happen to make Vit-D from the Sun.

All of our skin is covered with 7-Dehydrocholesterol and when UVB rays strike it it is then converted to Pre Vitamin-D which then is shuttled to the Liver and Kidneys for final conversion to Vit- D3 so if someone is getting plenty of Sunshine and yet have little Vit- D levels then as you can see any of these conversion steps could be broken down in the body.

Research published in 2006 by Joint Research Centre, Institute for Health and Consumer Protection, and European Chemicals Bureau has found that two of the suspected dangerous phthalates banned by EU legislation - diisononyl phthalate (DINP) and diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP) - show no risks to human health or the environment for any current use.

The older those lights get, the more UV they emit.

Latitude an time of year could have a lot to do with it. But there must be more to this case than that. Most people are wasting money on vitamin D3 if they take more than 2000 IU. Some people have liver problems and are forced to take 50,000 IU per week in order to compensate.
