Default Fish Oil or Krill Oil

I decided to start taking fish oil after all the great things I have read about it for prevention reasons. I'm a healthy and active person. The only vitamins I take are a multi, calcuim + D and glucosamine/chondroitin.

I've been looking at a bottle of Fish Oil 1400mg (900mg total Omega 3). It's only one tablet a day, no fishy after taste and it's been purified to eliminate mercury. It has 647mg EPA and 253mg DHA. Then I was reading all the great things about Krill Oil. I started to look at a bottle of Schiff Mega Red Omega-3 Krill Oil. One daily serving provides 300mg Krill Oil, 90mg Omega 3 Fatty Acids, 45mg EPA and 27mg DHA.

Would the Fish Oil or the Krill Oil be the better option for me? I'm confused...there seems to be a significant difference between the two. Thank you in advance for any suggestions or any clarifications on this subject.

Amazonchix,

If your health is well and just looking at a preventative then i'd stick with the Krill oil although it's usually more expensive as i don't believe ''healthy'' individuals need high amounts omega-3's. Krill does have and antioxident astaxanthin but so does most fish oils if they have salmon in it.

There's some issues of internal bleeding if taken at a high doses and also it does oxidize very easy in the body as polyunsaturates are very unstable (rancidity) which could cause premature aging.

Usually people with bad blood parameters or with inflammatory conditions i.e. arthritis and/or autoimmune disorders would usually take high amounts as EPA clamps down on the pro inflammatory Cox Prostanoids in the cells if they choose to take them.

So i say go with the krill oil.

6/3

I wondered too about krill vs fish oil? I'm thinking fish oil is cheaper, yet just as good. I've heard some lack of data vs krill working as well, so I'm sticking w/ fish oil unless anyone can update?

I am sticking with fish oil - I am using Nature's Bounty Double Strength. I think the Krill oil thing is all hype. I also eat wild caught pacific salmon at least once a week. Would like to find a source for arctic char.

"They" say some side effects of krill, so high in fatty acids, can be diarrhea, and possibly indigestion.

And, since krill are a species of shellfish, if you have a shellfish allergy, you may be allergic to krill.

They also say (who are "they?!") krill hasn't been the market long enough for it's benificial claims to be poroven "beyond a doubt".

And, they also say it might interfere with anyone on a blood thinning medication.

Personally, I'm liking what I'm hearing so far, so I think I'll try it soon. Besides, any product hyped on "Dr Oz" can't be that bad!

The following brands of Fish Oil (not considering Krill, period) are what I'm considering. Nordic, Carlson's, NSI (Vitacost's, though I was told they DO use ingredients in it from China thus unsure of using this at all as of now), Trader Joe's Darwin brand & Costco's Kirkland.

Of these which is THE best? Thanks, but I've been confused on this for a long time now. Help!

Well you severely limited the pool of suggested oils by limiting it to those brands

Oops sorry . But I see you use Nature's Bounty? Do you think it is pretty good? I'll add that to my list if you really think it is good quality, as I think most of those I listed are. I just can't pinpoint which would be best. Thanks again.

Who knows which one is the best ..... however for myself i only purchase Carlson's as it's one of the few Soy Free fish oils on the market (look at the ingredients) as soy is a big no-no for me as i won't touch that crap.

I have never taken fish oil, so I can't compare, but I do take Megared (Krill). My doctor had me taking statin medication to control my cholesterol, which I took for about a year. The side affects of that particular drug were killing me. And even though it was controlling my cholesterol, I made the choice to stop taking that medication because of the nasty side affects. Within a few months my total cholesterol jumped up to about 275. At that point I decided to try Megared capsuls, after about six months of taking it, my cholesterol levels are now under control, and I don't have to deal with side affects of the statins anymore. Taking the krill oil has worked well for me, I've been using it now for 1 1/2 years and I've never felt better.
