Default Railroad question

Where's the nearest rail line to Manlius? I thought the nearest was in East Syracuse but I hear LOUD trains every morning and evening... I can hear the whistles and what sounds like the brakes like it's only a mile or so away. And East Syracuse is a 10-minute drive. It doesn't seem like I should be able to hear them so loudly and clearly. Or are trains just really THAT loud?

Just curious. Having kids definitely heightened by sense of smell and sound (just the biology of it, not meaning that I'm more alert now because of them lol) but it just doesn't seem like I should be able to hear it. I grew up in Fabius and couldn't hear the trains going through Apulia Station and that was only a few miles away.

I think trains really are just that loud. I'm amazed when I hear loud whistles and even engine noises both on University Hill and at my place closer to Midtown. Depending on the weather, the sound can really carry.

To answer that first question, I don't think there's any train traffic between the CSX/Amtrak mainline and the old DS&W line that runs through Jamesville.

On a related note, NYSDOT held a public meeting on the environmental impact statement for high-speed rail construction last night. Did anyone attend? I planned on going, but flaked out at the last minute.

I can hear the busy train line 2 miles west of me and the one 1 mile east of me. I can only hear the early morning freight trains on the western line , but keep in mind thats over 2 hills , 3 highways and 2 dense towns. I know its that line because Passenger service stops at 1am on the Eastern line , but I can only hear the horns on the western line but still thats impressive. With the Eastern line , in the evening and morning hrs i can hear the brakes , acceleration and deceleration of the trains and horns.

There's the line running through Jamesville that runs occasionally still, I think.

True! I hadn't thought about Jamesville... it sounds like it's coming from the north, rather than the west, but with the sound likely carrying a LOT over the hidden quarry and down into Manlius, whose valley extends somewhat north of me, it makes sense that I would hear it so loudly.

And that train is definitely still running. lol - my dad lives in Fabius-Pompey and works as a nurse in the ER at Community... he HATES that train track. If he has to rush off to work, he'll take the Cherry Valley Turnpike (Rt. 20) to LaFayette and go up 81... and I remember doing that myself, when going to OCC for the first two years.

I think you are hearing the main line, up by Rt 290. I hear it sometimes by me, and I'm some 5 miles south of you. I don't mind the sound, but I'm glad I'm not much closer!
