I am moving to Syracuse, and want to find a place in a safe neighborhood with professionals/families at Auburn or Skaneates area: house, town house, house apartments with 2 or 3 bedrooms. any recommendations are greatly appreciated.
I don't think there is a bad part of Skaneateles. Auburn is a pretty safe bet too. I would prefer the Skaneateles side of Auburn mostly for the style of older homes.

I agree that the part of Auburn around Hoopes Park is really nice. Near the High School and Emerson Park is real nice too. You would also be close to Owasco Lake if you go with that latter area. I guess the only area of Auburn that might be considered suspect is around Orchard St. Besides that, Auburn is safe for the most part. There's also the neighborhoods near the Polish and Ukrainian Clubs near Casey Park. Casey Park has the baseball stadium in which the Auburn Doubledays minor league baseball team plays in(Falcon Park). They play in the NY-Penn League, which is Class A. Around the Hospital is fine too.
Skaneateles doesn't have any bad areas at all and is one of the more affluent/upper middle class areas in the metro.
Where would you be working at, as Baldwinsville might not be too far away from your place of employment. It's a village surrounded by a greater area of about 35,000 people. There is plenty of shopping close by too. It's not too far from Auburn, as you can either get on the Thruway or take Route 31 to Route 34, if that is where you would be working at.
Another community near Auburn you might consider is Aurora, where Wells College is located. It's very small, but a very nice community.
If you want something closer to Syracuse, Camillus is an option too.
Sennett, just north of Auburn, is a pretty good town. I've lived their all my life. If you have kids and you live in Sennett, they'll most likely go to Weedsport, an absolutely excellent school district, as Sennett does not have a district.

Parts of Sennett are in the Skaneateles, Auburn and Jordan-Elbridge school districts too, if I'm not mistaken.
