Set up my online bill pay the other day and noticed that my US Dept of Education loan was serviced by a company in Utica. Most likely this one. I was happy to see it. Such sad news that more people in that hard hit city are losing their jobs.

I'll have to let my friend know! She's the one getting married at Highland Forest in May and she's putting together bags for all the out-of-towners. She wants to put something "Syracuse" in there and is thinking of possibilities - bottle of NY wine, bottle of Dino BBQ Sauce, bottle of the tomato oil, etc.

A place at Destiny sells what sounds like your talking about. They have several locations. IIRC it's call the Cheeky Monkey. They have free samples and whatever it was is pretty darn good.

First I wanna say I don't know anything more about this story then whats in the paper..

I have to believe whatever they are doing is still being done. So I'm guessing they got out bid.

This is part of what is adding up to a trend in my eyes, out of state outfits outbidding NY places.

Even NYS can no longer afford NYS. Three recent ones I'm aware of:

On a state hiway project last Spring/Summer/Fall up on RT 5 at least part of the work was done by a NJ company.

A large State agency with a large Syracuse area footprint is changing over to a private system using again a NJ company. Lay offs coming there soon I fear.

NYS drivers licenses are going to be printed in Canada now.

Yep - there's two competing hot tomato oils. I think Cheeky Monkey's one may require refrigeration - they sell it in the produce section of Tops and other places. They're both very good, and distinct from one another.

Becca,
Your prayers have been answered. According to Bob Niedt's retail column in the newspaper, Crate & Barrel will be opening a store in the Syracuse area in the "near future."

Update: Just checked their website saw the have outlet locations. My guess is they'll probably open a shoebox sized store with junk at Carousel's basement area

There is a store that either just opened or is opening this weekend which features products made in this area. I want to say it is called Made In CNY. Local vendors buy space in the store to sell their goods.
