Just curious Kenny 48, but are you looking into other homes in the area?

If so, this may be another one to consider: Eastwood Neighborhood Association

Just thinking but for those that are foodies and want/like walkability outside of Downtown Syracuse, these areas may work or may be worth a visit: Businesses Archive - Westcott Community

Dining & Nightlife » Crouse-Marshall

Food And Drink - Northside UP
North Salina: https://goo.gl/maps/VNVe1eyfCTy

Village of North Syracuse, NY
Main Street, which has multiple Italian based eateries, a couple of ice cream shops and some other restaurants: https://goo.gl/maps/4UxiK2uGeEQ2

Are there any others that come to mind?

You aren't too far from the University Hill area. On the flip side, the neighborhoods further north on the South Side can be/are rougher, but the immediate area where the house is is fine.

If you go west on Seneca Turnpike, you have some restaurants/shopping at Valley Drive and some shopping on South Salina Street north of the Turnpike. You also have some grocery stores and a little bit of shopping in Nedrow, which is a small suburb to the south. I'd suggest checking out Green Hills Farms, which is essentially a mini style Wegmans: One of the Best Grocery Stores in Syracuse NY | Green Hills

For the closest Wegmans, I would say to go to the huge one in DeWitt.

It is a diverse area, where north of Seneca Turnpike is predominantly Black, but mixed still with more of a working class feel and south of the Turnpike is predominantly White, but again mixed. North of the Turnpike tends to be nicer on the sides near where it gets hilly. More Valley information: City of Syracuse -> TNT Tomorrow's Neighborhoods Today

It kind of has a rural and suburban feel in parts as well.

I moved to where I am from Seattle Washington. I lived in an apartmend directly OVER I-5 the noise never really bothered me. I just tuned it out. The house I am looking at is about a quarter mile from the interstate, and there are woods in between. I am looking just for myself. I don't really care about the racial makeup of the area unless the neighborhood is dangerous or high crime. Right now I live in trailer trash land, ( please don't give me criticism for using that description ) It's white redneck and high crime. That's Florida for you, if you do not live in a touristy area. No I'm not really looking at other houses. I am looking at Central and Upper New York State in general. ( your taxes are outrageous! ) I simply got this listing, and more or less fell in love with this house. In a city like Seattle, no matter the neighborhood a place like this would cost over $500K. I simply like the house and the way it is situated, at the end of a dead end street on a hill.
Thanks for all the feedback. I am totally in the dark, when it comes to Syracuse. I spent my summers in Schoharie County when I was a kid, but that's it. My uncle had a farm on the outskirts, of Middleburgh.

Smile Looking at a house in South Valley area

Once again thanks for the input.

Just wanted to add a bit to what I already posted. I currently live in Florida, but I really do not like the hot summers. I'm a retired older gay man. ( sometimes putting that out there, gives me a better clue as to what to expect ). I've been wanting to move back up north for many years. I had been caring for my parents, but now they are both gone.

I miss the change of seasons. I lived in Seattle for close to twenty years, before moving to Florida. It was really not my choice. It just happened. I live in a more or less far flung suburb of Tampa. I'ts so different here. I have to keep my personal beliefs and preferences to myself. I don't dare have a rainbow sticker on my truck, or I would be a target. I'm simply tired of the hot weather, and the hot headed people who live here.

Syracuse from what I've read, is a fairly tolerant city. At least compared to the South. I'm limited in what I can pay for a house, but would rather live in town, near amenities than out in the boonies somewhere. Have seen a few places like that, that I liked, but all were "camps". I'm looking for a year round home. The place I'm looking at has the qualities of living out in the country, without being isolated from everything. That's why it appeals to me. Reminds me of a place I lived, many years ago in Oakland, California. Unfortunately that place burned down, in the Berkeley Hills fire of 1991 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oakland_firestorm_of_1991

Hawley-Green just north/NE of Downtown is a somewhat gentrified neighborhood by some in the local LGBTQ community: Hawley-Green Neighbors

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawl...toric_District

City of Syracuse -> TNT Tomorrow's Neighborhoods Today
City of Syracuse -> TNT Tomorrow's Neighborhoods Today

Also, according to an older NY Times census map from a few years back, the census tract around Sunnycrest Park had the second highest percentage of same sex households in Upstate NY behind the tract that covers Rochesters Neighborhood of the Arts. That Syracuse tract is in the previously mentioned Eastwood neighborhood and isn't far from Hawley-Green.

I'd also say that the East Side, east of Syracuse University all the way to the city/DeWitt line, particularly south of East Genesee Street would work as well. You can find churches near the University with Rainbow Flags on them and the same for a couple of churches in Downtown as well. Eastside info: City of Syracuse -> TNT Tomorrow's Neighborhoods Today

City of Syracuse -> TNT Tomorrow's Neighborhoods Today

Besides Syracuse University, you have LeMoyne College on that side of town and slightly into the town of DeWitt.

I do believe that the South Valley tract on that NY Times map had a visible same sex percentage as well.

My add more later, but hope this has helped....

Ok, I'd say other areas of the city that are similar are Winkworth/western portion of Strathmore in the outer SW, Bradford Hills/around Nottingham High and around LeMoyne College/Salt Springs Road on the East Side and perhaps Eastwood in between James and Burnet. All have hilly terrain with their share of trees. Some of these listings are in those areas: RealtyUSA - Property - Property-List

It would be nice for this building to be used again: Exclusive: Look inside Syracuse's long-abandoned high school | syracuse.com

The current Institute of Technology at Central is on the campus behind this building. Since opening several years ago, it has become the best SCSD high school in terms of graduation rate: https://data.nysed.gov/profile.php?instid=800000040860
