Hi everyone, im new here. A little background. Im 23 and I have a wife who is also 23 and we have an 11 month old son. Im geting out of the army at the end of this year and we plan to move to the Syracuse. My wife has one more semester left at SUNY Oswego with a degree in HRM and I plan to start at Onondaga Comm. College. For now we just want to rent an apartment/town house. We would like to keep the rent under $1000 for a desent place. Id like to be somewhat close to OCC but not right in downtown. Would like a safe, family neighborhood. Not really worried about school's right now since the little guy is only a year old. Pets are a must because we have two small inside dogs. Any help or recommendations would be great.

High Acres excepts dogs for a fee and is literally minutes from OCC on Onondaga Hill. Also, if you stay and it is time for your little man to go to school, the Westhill SD is one of the best in the area.

You would also be close to shopping in Fairmount and on Onondaga Boulevard near Westhill High.

Hi gtmphooah,

I'll try to give you my best info. In the past I used to suggest High Acres Townhomes for rentals. Then a couple weeks ago I toured that complex and was shocked how much I feel that complex has declined over several years. You can look at High Acres apartments and decide for yourself. Another Apartment Complex near OCC is The Meadows, 140 Westbrook Hills Dr., Onondaga Hill (Syr.) 13215, but I don't think they accept dogs; ONLY cats.

The specific complex that I would suggest for you, your wife and your baby son is Kings Gate West Townhomes and Apartments, 8 Kings Court, Camillus, NY. These apartments are located in a nice, pleasant, safe suburban location and the rents can be less than $1000 a month. Kings Gate West says pets welcome; ask them about their pet policy & rules. Kings Gate West is farther away from OCC than High Acres Apartments but I think the Kings Gate complex is in nicer condition than some other complexes. If your dogs are well behaved and DON'T bark all the time, I think Kings Gate West would be a nice home apartment for your young family. You should go to the Kings Gate Rental Office (don't wait until the last minute) one or two months before you want to move into an apartment or Kings Gate might be completely filled-up/rented and NOT have any place available for you.

There is plenty of convenient shopping on West Genesee Street at FAIRMOUNT Fair Shopping Plaza and westward to CAMILLUS Mall. Wegman's Grocery Store is great, there's also a TOPS Grocery Store in the area, and ALDI's Grocery Store on Milton Ave., Camillus sells groceries at discount prices; canned soups $0.59, ($1.00+^ at other stores) canned tuna $0.59, canned veggies $0.39 & $0.59 AND a whole lot more grocery items. You can save grocery money for your family.

Woodhaven Apartments and Winkworth Apartment Homes are some other nearby options that take pets, but you have to check to see if they take dogs.

First off, thank you for your service and welcome home!...the same to REVSALTY!

I can recommend Westminster Apartments on (7475) Morgan Road in Liverpool, New York (a suburb of Syracuse). I have a close relative who lives there. The grounds are well maintained and the staff is caring and second to none. You can lease a nice 2/2 aparment for $750.00 including cable. Dogs are allowed for a fee (see Westminster Apt link below).

Westminster Apartments are close to shopping (including Macy's) along bustling rt 31 and 57, shops, restaurants, entertainment as well as the Village of Liverpool, with its cafe's, library, mom and pop stores, Heids hotdogs (an "institution"), etc.

There is also Wegmans on rt 57 and rt 31 (amazing grocery store), Aldi's (discount grocery), Onondaga Lake Park (also known as Long Branch Park), etc. You are also a couple of minutes away from the New York State Thruway (get an "ez-pass" to get around the metro area).

Westminster is equidistant to SUNY Oswego and OCC, perfect for you and your wife. The drive to OCC might be a little challenging, but SUNY Oswego is a quick drive up Interstate 481. There is a small OCC north campus located the Seneca Shops along rt 57. There is a child care center (called Childtime) on Morgan Road, just a couple minutes north of Westminster Apartments. See the links below for apartment and immediate area details.

I know there are many great apartments in the Liverpool, New York (Town of Clay) area, but I know Westminster Apartments first hand. I live in Florida for business reasons, would like to return home to CNY myself. You and your family are very lucky, Good luck!!

I hate to contradict you, but I lived at Westminster for a year (lease ended Sept 2010) and had an absolutely horrible experience there! There was no way I was going to renew my lease. I thought the apts were very appealing when I first was looking into them, but I had problem after problem.

- Problems with my initial rental payments because they failed to actually sign me up for direct deposit after I filled out the paperwork.

- They never installed a microwave that I had paid extra rent for. Finally got it about a week after being in there.

- First upstairs neighbor was throwing trash over her balcony and it would land on my patio. I complained and luckily she was already moving out.

- Second upstairs neighbors (after previous move out) were constantly blasting loud music and stomping around at all hours of the night. Had to complain again.

- When walking the grounds (I have dogs), several areas were littered with cigarette butts.

- People do not clean up after their pets all the time. ESPECIALLY in the winter. When the snow started to melt, the disgusting stench of dog poo was all over the place. I also really hated taking my dogs for walk and stepping in dog poo left from other people. It's absolutely infuriating when I do so much to be a responsible pet owner.

- I had a mouse infestation. Absolutely not my fault, I'm a very clean person and all food was put away. After killing 8 mice in one night, management only plugged the hole they were coming in through (my kitchen sink cabinet). That worked well for awhile, until they found another hole in (utility closet in the hallway). The problem is they're living in the walls and nothing was being done to prevent them from getting in there.

I do agree that management and maintenance are super nice - they really do try. It's just that for me, living there was one disaster after another. I'm sure others have had wonderful experiences as well as bad experiences - I just wanted to give my 2 cents.

First, thank you for your service. As to finding a place to live, if you have around $1,000 to put towards rent, you could easily find a house to lease. Check out other areas of the city(upper NorthSide, Eastwood) for a place - there are good rentals around and it gives you a chance to check out family neighborhoods. And because Syracuse has a very good highway system, it's easy to hop on and get to either OCC or Oswego. Good luck, and welcome to Syracuse. It really is a good place to live.
