Why is the City of Syracsue issuing Taxi contracts in the first place?...its called competition.

DeWitt taxi company lands airport deal despite a City Council "no" vote | syracuse.com

I was also surprised that the City of Syracuse issues contracts for lost luggage delivery, which is an airline responsibilty in other city.

Syracuse mayor's supporters picked for airport contract to deliver lost luggage | syracuse.com

Other major upstate airports do not involve themslves in such businesses. It is apparent that despite changes taking place in Syracuse, there is still remnants of cronyism.

Remnants of cronyism? More than that... the cronyism is so deeply woven into the fabric of city and county government that it's usually invisible to the public except for the occasional revelations that surface in the Post Standard. I won't suggest that it's quite as bad as it was 20 or 30 years ago but it is still rampant.

Sad, but true...... I think that is one of the biggest obstacles, in terms of governmental leadership in the area. It occurs in the private sector to some degree too.

Totally in agreement. MY dad worked for the City School District for 35 years and I've heard so many stories about the made-up jobs... transferring incompetent people form one job to another to protect them... and I know it's just as bad at City Hall. I can't speak to the issue in the private sector but i do know that years ago the local New York Telephone office had an application screening process that included sorting the paper app forms so that the ones with the special code (which indicated that the form had been given to someone by a current employee who was authorized to hand it out) were at the top of the stack (NYT was actually taken to court over this practice and lost the case.) Ditto for Niagara Mohawk. back when $25K annually was really good money for a high school grad all such jobs at Niagara Mohawk went to people who were connected. The playing field was anything but level.

My mom actually declined the first job offer she had after graduating from SU. It was a city government job and when she applied they first told her nothing would be available soon - if ever. Then the hiring manager figured out who her dad was (he was not wealthy but was very well connected politically) and said "Oh... why didn't you tell me that you're Frank's daughter - of course we have a job for you!" To her credit - she was offended and looked for work elsewhere.
