The Only vehicle to own in Syracuse is a 4 wheel drive. Yes, the DPW usually does a good job on the streets---but not such a good job on the side streets--but there are times in Syracuse when you need 4 wheel drive, sometimes in your own driveway. If you can't afford a 4 wheel drive, get a front wheel drive. A 2 wheel drive pickup is the absolute worse choice, even with sandbags. They can't move in the winter. Syracuse also has many hilly streets and they can be a horror in the winter. The only thing better than a 4 wheel drive is the old fashioned tire chains, but they are a pain to put on and take off.
