Do you have one of that beautiful cathedral across from the courthouse? Oh, and the civic center too.
The view from the top of that enormous hill at OCC when I go there for the jazz fest is incredible. Don't know how it would turn out in a picture? I can nearly see to my house at the big lake, and that's 40 miles away.
You'll have to come down here and take some pictures. Yours are much better than mine. - Wait till the locks open though!

No, I didn't mean to imply that Syracuse was decrepit. I'm likely going to be moving there this summer! I know that every city has wretched areas, some more than others (I used to live in Philadelphia).....I also understand that bright, sunny days don't occur everyday in Syracuse. But they do occur!

I totally understand. I grew up 45 minutes east of Syracuse. Every place has it's good and bad. I thought moving to California would be the ultimate. Lately, I'd rather be back in the Syracuse area. Syracuse is a pretty good city. Had lots of fun there during college.

The City of Syracuse has so much potential, but as it is right now.... I wouldn't live there. That's why I only suggest living in the suburbs. What needs to happen for the City to get better is for the Syracuse region to start attracting thousands of high paying jobs, which will create a boom in the region, thus creating a high demand for housing, thus developers and investors fixing up old properties in the city. As more and more people move here new small businesses and retail shops can open to serve all the new residents. Then entire neighborhoods can go from depressing and run-down to trendy and inviting.
Sgoldie, I'll post more pictures when I get a chance. courthouse? yes. civic center? yes, but I thought I already posted a picture of that building.

Syracuse Now and Then
In looking at your Pics of Syracuse, just the areas that someone labeled as "the good" areas of Syracuse. What I noticed right off the bat was two things. The streets seem clear of the usual "scraps of garbage" like odd newspaper pages, plastci bags and the like one can usually see in any city of good size. The other note worthy item was new number of new structures intermixed with beautiful historical structures that were still functional and in use. In any city one finds "run down areas" but having seen first hand many a city thru not just the US but also overseas Syracuse looks like a beautiful and well kept city and would rate very high in a "Beautiful City" contest. Just my opinion/observation just from the photo's alone.

I just wanted to give this thread a much-needed "bump." Bella, you're truly the one who has given me the inspiration to do so much urban photography of Scranton and Wilkes-Barre on the PA forum (I'm now up to TEN photo tours!), and I just wanted to thank you for it. I'm considering a weekend getaway to Syracuse over the summer to simply wander aimlessly around the city, as I love to do when visiting any area. I think traversing an area on foot is the best way to get a good "feel" for it. Thanks again for these wonderful photos! (Cyber pats you on the back!)

Syracuse has trash typically strewn everywhere....I was disgusted when I first got here. One time while downtown, with my friend who was visiting from California, we were stopped at a red light while pedestrians walks cross the street in front of us. A girl drinking out of a green plastic mountain dew bottle while walking across the street. She finished her drink and then chucked the bottle across the street, hitting the building on the other side, and carried on as if nothing was different about the day. I couldn't believe it! Syracuse has trashed out areas, but this mentality just blow me away.

Yes, Syracuse does have a litter problem. Many low lives in the city don't take pride in themselves or in where they live.
The litter looks much worse in the Spring. Around Earth Day, volunteers and city crews go around cleaning up the trash for the summer. Clean up crews do pick up the litter periodically, but it should be done every week IMO.
