And the depressing city neighborhoods
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ^above photos...me trying to take photos of the "nice" homes in the University section of the city. Atlas! Most of the city wouldn't look half bad if homeowners/renters/landlords actually paint the house, trim hedges, use mulch, and weed out overgrown vegetation. |

The pictures of downtown Syracuse that you, Bella, posted awhile back are great. But, to be honest, I cannot wait to leave Syracuse. I joined the city-data forum a few days ago to obtain information regarding relocating to Baltimore. As much as I will miss my family in the Syracuse and surrounding areas this city just has nothing to offer a young adult. Its true, Syr has been trying to rebuild downtown living over the past few years. Unfortunately if I were to wait around until they finished I would be too old and more interested in moving back out of the city to start a family. It’s nice to know that Syracuse is on the right track. I look forward to someday-moving back to the Syracuse area, possibly back into Oswego County. But for a twenty-three year old the city is depressing. The crack down on DWI's (rightfully so, i know) has made it near impossible to go downtown for a couple drinks. Cab rides are only financially feasible if you live within 15 minutes of the city. That being said, it is just so tiring to drive everrrrywhere. And, where are the jobs? Or, at least good ones. There is such little selection.
I know there has been talk in the Post Standard over the last year confirming that folks my age are leaving CNY. Its too bad. I know I must speak for some of those twenty-something year olds when I say it will be difficult to live without Syracuse Basketball, State Fair and Wegmans. And I truly am hopeful for the city....but for now, its just time to go. ![]() |

I enjoyed seeing Bellafinzi's excellent-quality photos of Syracuse. While never having been to Syracuse proper (I've been to the outskirts), I must say that these photos show a side to this city that seems oddly sad and yet quite uplifting all at once. I cannot help but be optimistc about a rebirth of this great city--guardedly so, but optimistic nonetheless! Syracuse is a dulled, damaged diamond in the rough. She needs "polishing." It can be done if all those who are in charge have the political will to snap into action! What a waste of human potential! The buildings are there, set in place. The streets are there. Like the poverbial phoenix, Syracuse may some day rise from the ashes of post-industrial collapse and shine again with a renewed vigor and purpose! Syracusians need to overcome their self-doubts that have only added to the general malaise of the ravages of declining industrial might from the past few decades. They need to dust off the ashes of despair and get energized into making this city into the beacon of commerce for CNY. They need to vote out all those current politicians who lack the drive, ambition and a clear and realistic vision for Syr's revitalization.
From my keyboard to the politicians' ears!! Pidgett |
