Default Prospective Student for Syracuse University

I am looking into Syracuse University and heard that it was in the middle of a really bad neighborhood is this true? And does anyone have any opinions on this school? I want to make sure I make the right decision on where I go to school. Anything will be helpful. Thanks!

There is one part that is somewhat close to an area of public housing, but it is not in the middle of a really bad neighborhood. It is an urban campus. So, you should be aware of your surroundings and take advantage of resources that will keep you safe, if needed.

An opinion of the school will depend on what you would decide to study and what you are looking for in a college experience.

It's actually in a really good area of the city. Look at the 10th page of the PDF http://www.upstate.edu/publicsafety/...ity_report.pdf

It would all depend on what you are studying and what schools are your other options.

Syracuse University is in a City location; Urban setting. It is on University Hill. West of SU are several Hospitals/Medical Centers/high-rise parking garages on the hill above the city. Then you go a little farther westward down the hill to flat land, then Interstate 81, and then some public housing for low income residents as well as some private homes some of which are occupied by people with limited/poverty incomes=this area is south of downtown Syracuse. Any less desireable neighborhood for the most part, probably would be west of Interstate 81 and south of East Adems Street or maybe near one area of East Genesee Street & East Fayette Street. So no, SU is not in the middle of a real bad neighborhood. Any bad area is a few distant blocks away.

When you attend any Urban/City location University/College (not just SU), it is always a good idea to be mindful/aware/conscious of your surroundings and whether there are people nearby. In daytimes I think you'd have very little/no problems/concerns. At night, just like any typical city street, you simply be cautious; actually I don't think you would have any problems. Some students like to walk with a friend or a group of friends when going places=NOT that this would be necessary at SU. Problems are not necessarily confined to Urban/City locations; suburban colleges can experience problems too.

A lot of students live right near/at the Syracuse University location and on the surrounding streets that fan-out from the intersection of Westcott St @ Euclid Ave.=(check a Syracuse street map). Students live on Westcott St., Euclid Ave., Comstock Ave., Ostrum Ave., Clarendon St., Stratford St., other streets in that large neighborhood.

What other NY State universities/colleges have you been considering? Colgate University is located in the lovely small village of Hamilton NY. SUNY Oswego has a nice campus location on Lake Ontario. Cornell University is located in the decent small city of Ithaca. SUNY Albany has a nice campus. SUNY Geneseo has a nice campus. R.I.T. in Rochester has a nice suburban "feel" location. R.P.I. has a nice hilltop campus overlooking Troy NY. SUNY-IT at Marcy is in a decent location near Utica city. Hamilton College in Clinton NY has a beautiful hilltop campus high above that small lovely village. SUNY Cortland has a nice campus in the nice village of Cortland NY. SUNY Cobleskill has a nice campus at the nice small countryside village of Cobleskill NY. Binghamton "University" SUNY has a nice suburban location at Vestal(Binghamton) NY.

Thank you this is very helpful! I have also looked into Ithaca. I want to be a photographer so I need a school that offers photography as a major and I would like to minor in Spanish. I don't want to go to an art school because I want to experience college life, I would like to be able to go see a college football game or basketball game. I am looking for a school in New York or Massachusetts.

Buffalo State may be a great choice as they have those sporting events, the program that you want, is cheaper, is in a great part of the city of Buffalo and is in a bigger city. Actually, a sister and a brother went there and liked it.

I believe that SUNY Brockport also has a photography program and would offer that experience. It is 20 minutes west of Rochester. It is a nice, walkable village on the Erie Canal.

Here's a list that I found online: Photography Schools in New York
