Hi all,
I'm going to be visiting the Syracuse/Ithaca area in the first 2 weeks of August to settle some financial and personal issues. My dad (who is making the travel arrangements for my mom and I) tells me that he's having a tough time finding hotel accommodations. It's strange because he said that a few weeks ago when he was looking at hotels in the area, there were plenty of rooms. But suddenly now, all the rooms have filled up. There's only 1 available in Ithaca (where we will be mainly) and it can't accommodate 3 people so he has to get us a hotel room in a town 30 miles away (he didn't say which one) but there, he could only find a place that will accommodate 3 of us in a more expensive hotel.

I'm curious - is there anything special going on in August in that area that makes the hotels unavailable?

Also, while I'm at it - we'll be there a week taking care of some stuff, but we'll have some time to see sights as well. Any suggestions on what we could see would be great, since I don't know the East Coast at all (I'm a West Coast girl myself ).

Tam

Probably because of college students moving into both cities/surrounding area and also the State Fair in Syracuse is in August. So, it is a busy time in the area.

You could also try some area Bed and Breakfasts. The Halsey House in Trumansburg is one of the best we've stay at, but not cheap. There is a ton of stuff to do in the area, Ithaca has some wonderful parks such as Buttermilk Falls, Robert H.Tremen and Cornell Plantations to name just a few. Try this Website:Visit Ithaca, NY - Official Site for Ithaca, NY & Tompkins County. Too bad you won't be in the area later in the month, the NY State Fair is well worth a visit.
