I believe that this is one of several locally owned department stores that were located downtown and that no longer exist.

Can't tell you. You can try News, Sports, Entertainment, Video, and Life in Central New York - Syracuse.com as they have a discussion board. I'm sure someone there will know.

You might also try the Syracuse newspaper website, syracuse.com. There is an archive feature, although a small cost is involved for the entire article.

I do recall Edwards. I think it closed in the mid to late 1980's. The last location it was in was on North Salina St, probably either the 200 or 300 block. It seems like Edwards may have relocated to that particular site in the late 60's/very early 70's. It was a big deal at the time when that new bulding was built, but the details as to why are sketchy with me. The original site seems more in the 100 block of South Salina. I remember going school clothes shopping at both Edwards and Dey's in the early-mid 1960's prior to Camillus Plaza being built, and Fairmount Fair being enlarged.

Tomorrow, I will ask my mother where Edwards originally was, when it moved, what the big deal was, when it closed, etc. Although she's 82, she does have a good memory for things like this.

Sorry, but I can't really tell you for certain when Edwards opened. While my 82 year old mother is very sharp mentally, I doubt she'll be able to come with an exact opening year. It probably is long before she was born. However, she does recall going there with her mother as a young child, which would mean it was open in the 1930's.

Additionally, she did recall that the store she went to in the 1930's was further down on S. Salina. Nearly opposite Dey Brothers. Said it was a good store, and that her mother always went into both stores, but probably bought more at Deys. (Dey Bros store was around longer, had more stores than Edwards.)

Also, the name of the store was E. W. Edwards not C.W. Edwards. That info may prove helpful.

If we can come up with anything more, I'll post it. Any other specific questions, even though I might not have any more info??

Default I remember Edwards...

The original Edwards was on S. Salina, between Fayette and Washington. The building is still there but I'm not sure what's occupying it. It's on the side opposite the Chase Bank building. Edwards built a new store in the early 70s at the corner of Washington and S. Salina. I remember that store well: it has a glass elevator, which was a big deal back then. I'm not sure what's in that building now, although I do know it's not a commercial use.

I grew up in Syracuse in the 60s. I remember a lot of the old, large downtown department stores: Edwards, Witherills, Dey Brothers, Sibleys, Addises, Flahs, and McCrory's. All gone, although many of the buildings are still there.
