Syracuse Area Sees Increase in Patent Issuances and Applications

Hoffman Warnick, an Albany-based intellectual property law firm with offices in Boston and Rochester compiles a quarterly index of patent issuances and patent applications for Syracuse and other markets in which it does business. The number of patent applications from inventors residing in Onondaga County increased by 23% in the past year while the number of patent applications increased by 44% in Quarter 2 when compared to Quarter 1 of 2012. Data was obtained from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Patent activity increases in Syracuse area

A more detailed analysis providing a breakdown of firms applying for and receiving patents would be very interesting. I would assume the majority of the patents are from inventors affiliated with Lockheed Martin, Anaren, Saab-Sensis, SRC (formerly Syracuse Research Corporation), Welch Allyn, Carrier Corporation, Cooper Crouse-Hinds, Inficon and SU. An encouraging sign of future growth prospects in CNY would be if a growing number of patents and patent applications were coming from those working at startup firms or smaller, established companies with solid growth prospects. The inclusion of Madision and Oswego counties as part of the Syracuse Patent Index would be helpful. There are several companies in adjacent counties that have R&D operations including The Fulton Companies in Richland, Otis Technology in Phoenix, Davis-Standard (formerly Black Clawson) in Fulton, BioSpherix in Lacona, and Dielectric Laboratories in Cazenovia

This is very encouraging news and it would be interesting to see if Madison and Oswego counties were included, if the number of patents increase in the metro area. I even wonder if places like Tessy Plastics, Budweiser and Schneider Packaging, among some others, had people involved as well?
