Syracuse named one of the 20 best performing U.S. cities
Syracuse named one of the 20 best performing U.S. cities | syracuse.com

Syracuse makes the top ten of worst performing cities
The 11 Worst-Performing Cities in America - Yahoo! Finance

People have posted these surveys if they support their views of Syracuse, both pro and against.
Can we all just agree that they are all a load of bull?

That was the worst ranking I've ever seen....First of all, they're so stupid that they made a top 11? When was the last time you heard of a top 11? Next, they state that employment is up 1.8% since 2010 and gross metro product is up 6.5 percent. Also, they don't state any future development, and solely based it off of unemployment and home prices which the Post-Standard had an article about how Syracuse might break the record for most home sales.

The Syracuse.com piece today pointed it out too:

Syracuse makes the top ten of worst performing cities | syracuse.com

It's the same report, one quarter later. At best, the metrics of this seem... suspect.

I agree that some of these lists can be suspect. Like acknight stated, the top 11 list leaves out that it is for that quarter. Many of these lists are for the top 100 metros, even though there are about 370 metros in the country. So, viewing the criteria is important.

Stats always lie.

Syracuse's unemployment is currently 9.0% and the article doesn't even mention that much.

It was odd that the Upstate NY metros mentioned didn't have their unemployment rates mentioned and they all had the worst pictures on that top 11 list. Albany's unemployment rate is actually below the national average. it became clearer when I looked at the Brookings website and its criteria was for that quarter. So, it is ever changing.

Also, the Brookings website has a lot of great information that puts some things into perspective: Metropolitan Policy Program | Brookings Institution

I don't buy into any of these stupid things. They make up 90% of the crap they are spouting out. One year Syracuse is the best place in the US and a few months later, it's a craphole. Yeah, ok.

Then again you can create any list using statistics. They manipulate them constantly. You're even taught how to do that when you take stats in college. Great, isn't it? Heck, I could take a survey about apple picking and end up with a report about how many blue monkeys live in Seneca Lake.
