One of my friends who lives in the Syracuse area is looking at a job in Binghamton, but doesn't want to move down there. Has anyone ever done that commute on a regular basis and found it to be do-able? I told her she should look into Ithaca, but that's still an hour commute, and even Cortland is 45min. Any thoughts on better locations? Or is the commute tolerable?

Marathon and Whitney Point would be closer to Binghamton, but there isn't much in either community.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons she wants to stay up here - because there really isn't much between Syracuse and Binghamton. Ithaca would be a great area, but it's still an hour commute.

If she is a skier, it wouldn't be so bad. Outside of maybe Cortland, there isn't much else.

So I'm assuming then that the commute isn't worth it?

There are many pleasant areas in/around Cortland and Homer. Downtown Cortland now offers a number of casual local eateries, with shopping for basic necessities in a compact area along Route 281/13 junction west/southwest of city limits, and fairly close access to Syracuse for shopping or Ithaca for cultural events. Although Cortland does have some do it yourself culture too it's not as web connected and discoverable as elsewhere, one might have to read the back pages of the (amazingly enough still locally owned) Cortland Standard even yet to establish a network.

The drive from Cortland to any of Binghamton, Syracuse, Ithaca is within normal metropolitan commute times. Ithaca to Binghamton over hilly two-lane roads any of the 3 ways you slice it can become a drag, and Syracuse to Binghamton gets into the hypermiling commute range.

I don't quite know why the Cortland area seems overlooked. If it were in PA (or maybe further from Ithaca) people would probably get more excited over it. Perhaps the fairly decrepit state of the areas immediately adjacent to the I-81 interchanges color one's opinion. Of course Binghamton and Syracuse have much larger zones of decrepitude.

It may depend on where in the Binghamton area the job is located too. So, perhaps the commute time from Cortland could be adjusted.

I meant from Syracuse to Binghamton, not Cortland

It depends, but I did the Liverpool to Fort Drum commute and it wasn't that bad. It took me about an hour and 5-10 minutes. I could get to the first Watertown exit in about 50-55 minutes. So, it will depend on many variables.

CK, and you're saying that Syracuse (Eastwood) to Utica is a bad commute? In distance, it's less but is there more traffic going toward Utica on the 90 then on the 81 northbound?
