You'd rather get what you need and get out...enough of the crowd, the heat burning sun. My heart has been in NY for as long as I can remember, and I've only been there once. I grew up in K.C. MO, but I wouldn't want to go back there. No desire. My son is 8 and I'm currently on the NY Civil Service List and so far I've applied for one position that opened with my exam title in Syracuse. I have my job locations for the state set in Albany and Syracuse but I've been convinced by your threads that Syracuse would seem more fitting for me and my son. My patience is running thin and looking for work in NY 3,000 miles away is not easy. Any advice on making that easier? And getting there quicker? I need two things and I'm on my way...a good job and a nice, safe, apartment to stay in.

Sorry to hear about your situation. Wish I could do more to help. But to be quite honest I do not have a good answer. Good luck and do not give up!

Your town is gorgeous! What is the price range for the upscale homes being built? How close is Clay to the beach? I am very interested in living in upstae NY and sent you a PM. Thanks for taking the time to post these photos.

Thanks! Just hope my photos are not creating expectations that are too high. The whole town doesn't look as nice as the areas I photographed. Most of the town isn't even developed yet and there is an industrial park that's located smack dab in the middle of town. However, the town looks better and better with each passing year IMO.
The upscale homes in the Town of Clay are around $300,000. The beach? Well, there is 1) Oneida Shores .....about 10-20 minutes away in Northern Cicero .... The Official Website of the Onondaga County Parks 2) Sylvan Beach in Oneida County .....about 30 minutes away.... Sylvan - Verona Beach Resort Association 3) Green Lake in Fayetteville about 20 minutes away...... New York State Parks :: Green Lakes State Park 4) Sandy Island Beach State Park on Lake Ontario about 45 minutes away.... Sandy Island Beach

Great work! I wish this thread was around a couple of years ago when we were relocating here from Massachusetts. I still can't believe how friendly people are in this area compared to MA. We have great neighbors, great schools, and everything is nearby. Amazing home prices too... Our house would have cost $400k or more where we were living before! We got a deal on our house ($100k) and it has needed very little work... 3 BR, 3 baths, 1600 sq ft.
I'm looking forward to putting up Christmas lights in a few weeks. Some people around here get pretty competitive and it's a lot of fun to drive around and see all the lights. I am bracing myself for winter, though. What's the concensus? Will it be a rough one this year?

Thank you and happy you like it here! It's good to see another northern suburbanite on the forum.
About the weather. According to Dave Eichorn, Chief Meteorologist on Channel 9, Syracuse will have above normal temperatures and near normal snowfall this winter.

Hey Southerners. Want to know why all the businesses build there instead of up north. Here is a great example:
On Rt. 31, a tax to fix traffic?
Tuesday, March 04, 2008
By Tom Leo Staff writer
Clay Supervisor Jim Rowley believes he has come up with a way to help ease the traffic congestion along a stretch of Route 31 that handles as many as 3,000 cars an hour.
He wants businesses along the roadway to help pay for road improvements to divert some of the nearly 35,000 cars that every day travel the east-west roadway between routes 481 and 57.
Syracuse.com
Some development projects have to go through 5 to 10 years of planning before they.... get approved? No.... before they create another tax. LOL
Since the State of New York refuses to invest in the Syracuse area, Syracuse area businesses and residents have to pay the price. Meanwhile booming New York City receives billions of dollars from the State to fix their infrastructure problems. Just another reason why Upstate NY is dying and Downstate NY is booming....

What would I do to ease traffic on Route 31 if I was in charge of the Town of Clay?
1) I would lobby the State of New York to a) build an on ramp and an off ramp (a new exit) off I-481 onto either Morgan Road or Henry Clay Blvd. b) widened Route 31 from Bridgeport to Great Northern Mall c) finish the Baldwinsville Bypass project d) pay for the four needed roadway improvements that is outlined in the article in the previous post
2) Approve the two development projects that have been held up in the Town of Clay planning process for years and years NOW!!! Do not wait to find a solution. Work on the solution to the traffic as the projects are under construction. The Town of Clay is losing millions in tax revenue each year the projects are delayed.
People in the Syracuse area are too spoiled to realize that "real" cities have traffic. If Syracuse starts to have traffic in spots, it does not mean we should stop all new development there. Why? If traffic becomes bad enough in certain locations, people will just avoid traveling down that road during certain hours of the day and find a different route. That is what happens in other cities.
Meanwhile, this County (Onondaga County) should become more forward thinking..... instead of reactionary. Invest in the transportation infrastructure (new roads, widened roads, new highway exits). Plan for the future. Assume that Onondaga County will grow over one million people. Do not listen to the State or the experts that say otherwise. The only places that will grow in the future are the places that build the infrastructure in advance of development.
