That is true and that is SUNY school tuition for a private school, but some people actually do it.
Another option could be Syracuse Academy of Science, a charter school which has an elementary school in the South Valley neighborhood: http://www.sascs.org/elementary/index.php
Unless they move to the Syracuse City School District, there's little reason to pay for a private school. The suburban or direct-rural districts all range from perfectly fine to very good. This has to be a large consideration for an overall household budget. You'll pay considerably more for the same house - both in price and taxes - for a safe, walkable area in the city of Syracuse, than in a village relatively nearby... and then likely have to pay for private school as well. At the price of a city home + tuition, you could have a country estate (just about) with almost as small - or as equal - a commute time.
And even for private school, the tuition for K-6 varies wildly. In some, there's no additional tuition required after x-many children. Immaculate Conception, in Fayetteville, is one of them. The family never pays for more than 3 children/~$12K/year for all.

I think you can still get a home within Syracuse for 80-120,000 in a solid area. I believe that the rental on Broad have homes in that range and is a fine area. Taxes are probably lower than what you pay in a village as well. So, if they want to, some of that money could go towards private school. I forgot about the Montessori Schools, that could be options as well.
People would also be surprised by how some SU faculty and staff send their children to Ed Smith and Nottingham for school. School performance has more to do with how education is emphasized in the home and there are some kids going to Ivies and well regarded public and private colleges/universities from SCSD schools. Say Yes to Education may be attractive as well.
With the Solvay home, I was thinking about how private schools may not be necessary and that area of Solvay is very nice(Piercefield neighborhood). Its proximity to Westvale Plaza and even Fairmount Fair could allow for plenty of shopping options within a short distance either on foot or by bus too.

This SCSD (Ed Smith/Levy [now closed]/Nottingham) alum wouldn't trade any of that away. It's hardly a district without problems - but there are some really excellent teachers in those schools. And the Say Yes scholarship program is quite good.
Thanks for all of the help thus far! SO, a little change in plans. We are definitely looking to buy now, and want to be around $200,000. Walkability is still a huge factor. Because we are buying instead of renting, we want something with 4br, 2.5ba. Liverpool is our ideal location, but there's not much out there available right now. Any thoughts on Baldwinsville? I hear they have a nice village area that is walkable. Oh, and I don't want to be any more than 20 minutes commute away.
607 Vine St, Liverpool, NY 13088 - Zillow Taxes are $6046. Nice, fenced yard, big deck, adorable house with a finished basement that could be useable as a guest room... it's used as a family room now. SUPER walkable location.
