Syracuse - Where are the GOOD areas to live? (Clay: apartments, rentals)

We are moving to the Syracuse area. Ultimately, we want a little town outside the city. But short term, we are going to need a place in town (for like 4 to 6 months). I have never even visited the area...and need help with knowing what are the good areas to consider renting a studio apartment. The job we are relocating for is right by Syracuse University. What are the better areas? Or even, what are the areas to stay away from? Thanks.

Usually Bella handles this sort of thing.

Most of the suburbs are fine and only take 15 minutes to get to the university as it's right off rt 81. Dewitt/Manlius are the expensive burbs more so as you get further out of town, Lafayette/Jamesville are rural and very hilly near ski slopes, B'ville/Liverpool have their own little villages are a bit older but close in, and Clay/Cicero are closer to the new mall strip. Within the city the area on top of the (big) hill and directly adjacent (only) to Onondaga CC/ Community Genl Hospital is nice. Solvay abuts an industrial area.

It's the area between W Genesee St (downtown), Rt 81, and the Seneca Tpk that is the worst though I can't say N. Syr or anywhere within the city is all that great with the excption of Camillus to the west and those areas by the SU Manley fieldhouse that are going out of the city.

I disagree. North Syracuse may not be the Fayetteville/Manlius of the city but it is clean, close to everything and a relatively nice reasonable priced area.

Sedgewick farms is a nice area for singles or married couples and there are some rentals in those historic homes, it is close to the University and a very nice area however it is a "preservation area" so it is an entity of its own where it is at.

Oh you're right North Syracuse the community isn't bad. Not to be confused with the North side of Syracuse by the baseball stadium which is what I was referring to.

Sgoldie did an excellent job of summing up most of the nicer suburbs. And I'd agree that the North Syracuse area is a nice place to live.

Places to stay away from. Most of the City, Solvay, East Syracuse, Minoa, Mattydale, Lyncourt (too depressing IMO).

Sorry I should have been more specific, the property is a few blocks from Schiller Park to the north and St Josephs Hospital Health Centre to the south-west. Also close to the Carousel plaza expansion site, which is in phase 1 of extension!

Just a suggestion: Why don't you post it as a new thread, specifying "What do you think of these areas [insert places]?" as the topic title. It may just be that a person with a good answer hasn't read through this particular thread on moving from LA...

hello- here's a suggestion. Go to "Orange housing" dot com, then look for studios NEAR "Drumlins" (it's the county club just to the S.West of the U) Quite a few of the profs live there, quite a few professional people, and a few of them seem to rent out studio apartments in their home with seperate entrances. (usually to grad students, but basically they're just renting to people whom they feel will be well beahved) A few have "cottages" behind the house, which they rent out as well.

Another thought is Jamesville. It's a quite, almost country suburb which is close to the University (just south of it) and if you take the back streets in (which, btw, are ALWAYS clear--the "back streets" are more like a little country rd right to Drumlins, full of very nice, every expensive houses--THESE folks always have well cleared rds!) it's a few minutes drive.
