My Story-
I will be starting school at Syracuse University and taking a course at Onondaga Community College for Spring 2015 courses. I won't drive, and I would like to rent a cheap studio.
So I am moving to Syracuse in December or January. I spent a week there in October, and I will be there next week looking too. I am moving from Manhattan and starting grad school. Manhattan was fine since I cannot drive for health reasons. However, I have 2 roommates and pay $750 per month. This is not ideal! I won't miss Manhattan since it is expensive. I like city life and walking around cities too. I would definitely appreciate your advice on places that I should move, and here are my questions for you.
What I would like-
A studio near a bus line for less than $700. I can't drive, but I don't mind walking 7 or 8 blocks. I just need a grocery store and bus stop near me.
My Questions-
Which neighborhoods are very dangerous? *I will be walking around alone at 10pm some nights.
Which neighborhoods surround Onondaga Community College?
Which neighborhoods surround Syracuse University?
I would prefer not to live off of a highway. It feels weird and dangerous walking along those alone.
The grocery store part is going to be the tricky part of your request.
Maplewood Apartments might work for you Maplewood Apartment Homes for Rent - Syracuse, NY Apartments | Apartment Finder It is right behind Nottingham plaza which has a gas station, pharmacy, banks and some small restaurants and other shops. The other plaza is about 2 or 3 blocks away and it has a tops grocery store. It's also on the bus line and within close proximity to SU, OCC will be a little further though
Lastly, Westcott area might work for you. It's near SU and has a variety of shops and restaurants within walking distance (no grocery store) They don't really have apartment complexes but they have a number of flats. You might be able to find something on Orange Housing. Like this studio Orange Housing - Classified Listings I would just recommend being careful and check out the places in person off this site because a number of the studios are going to be found in party houses but not all, a number of them can be quiet places with only grad students. That's why I recommend checking them out in person so you can get a feel for it.
Is it safe to take the bus at night from one of the neighborhoods to the other? I may have to leave class late at night or leave the library.
Does this sound like a bad idea?
You should be fine, as Onondaga Hill is a safe, quiet suburban area and you have bus lines and other modes of transportation to and from SU. Shuttle Escorts
My last class will be end at 9pm, but I usually study at the library.
I moved to the area, and I decided to use the Shuttle for Tops. I have also taken a taxi to Trader Joe's for food. If you all have more ideas, just say so.

Thanks again for your help!
If you don't mind me asking, where did you end up in terms of a general area?

There are buses that get you pretty close (within a block or so) of Trader Joes as well - any Shoppingtown-bound buses (30s and 76s at least) get you fairly close, and there's a line from downtown (168) that actually runs into the plaza across the street from Trader Joes (it turns off of Erie maybe 50 yards before TJs, though I think the last stop on Erie is at Bridge a block or two back).
I used the 68 to get to Bridge St and Trader Joe the other day. That was two blocks away. Returning required a taxi since I bought 4 bags of groceries, and I was not going to walk down Eerie Blvd in the snow with those bags.
I'll try the 30 next time.
Anyway, that map was very helpful. I wish that I had it earlier.

If you are going to use CENTRO, during the winter, I'd continually check the website for snow routes. If the weather gets pretty bad, they may make some changes to the routes.
