Question University Area, Syracuse help

Hi All - I was hoping someone could help me gather some info on the University Area of Syracuse. I just got a position working for SUNY ESF and I am searching for safe and affordable housing in the area. Can anyone offer any opinions of renting in that area? Is it safe for a young single woman? Are there other areas in Syracuse that I should consider living in instead? What areas should I stay away from? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Try Camillus. It's about a 20 min drive on the highway to SU. Nice area and rent is with in reason. The SU area is really a party town...depending on your age. I myself would live on the out-skirts of SU. But that depends if you have a car. If not, then yes live near the SU Hill. Stay away from the South Side

If you don't mind driving 15 minutes to work, I suggest Liverpool/Salina. It's in the northern suburbs and there are many nice places to rent there.

If you want to stay closer to SUNY ESF than DeWitt would be a good choice. I imagine rent would be more expensive in DeWitt than in Salina. Most of the people who work in the University Area live in DeWitt or Manlius since they are the closest suburbs. Good luck and welcome to the area!

Thank you for your help! I am planning on coming to Syracuse next week to get a feel for the areas that people have suggested. One thing I do know is to stay away from the South side (thanks cuse!) Prices for studios seem pretty much the same in most areas around the city, so I'm hopeful that I will find something nice and safe and in my price range. Thanks again!

I've been renting around the university area for a couple years (I'm an ESF student) and would recommend living around the Westcott st community, I love the community vibe, and it's only a mile from campus. so if you're at all environmentally minded it's a short bike ride. I've lived on Concord place and Clarendon st, i'd recommend concord place, harvard, or any of those little streets around there, they're out of the college buzz with a lot of cool families, and not in the middle of nowhere. www.orangehousing.com has some listings. (If you do live there make sure to stop by alto cinco - best mexican food ever!!)
