I guess they base the number on multiple things that people find fun, how many buisnesses offer those items and then the population of a city. I thought their study was very well done.

People who think that there's nothing to do in the Syracuse area are lazy, plain and simple. They're expecting some kind of free-activity bug to bite them in the hindparts.
You want to do something? Go DO it. It's all here... but you need to actually get up and GO somewhere and DO something.
Maybe they think we're boring because we lack of gambling in the city, which isn't far actually. lol. Or maybe we need more upper-class "gentlemen's clubs." :P
sorry, but that study's a joke. You have to look no farther than the poll they did on the article or the comments from readers. Syracuse is OK, but there's no way it beats either Vegas or Orlando

On the surface, yes i agree its ridiculous to think that Syracuse would ranked above those 2 cities. If you read how the study was derived i think it makes sense though. More of a ratio of population, to the diverseness of the activities available to them. Kind of interesting that Albany, Rochester, Syracuse and Buffalo all made it into the top 30. I will never take anything written on those syracuse.com forums to heart on any issue, the people who post there are disturbed and pathetic. They are the reason that i post here, and not there.

I actually agree, especially if you have a family. We have publications like the New Times and Family Times that offer a lot of things that are going on in the area. We have festivals of all kinds and a good sports and arts scenes too.
Then, when you add the location of the area to so many things within an hour/hour and a half, I can see how the area got ranked so high.
I don't think the study is a joke at all because for once a study takes multiple factors into consideration. Sure on the outside one would think Orlando should come in at the top or Vegas but those areas put ALL of their energy into only one way to entertain people. Orlando offers amusment parks and Vegas offers shows and casinos. Plus their population of people is much higher. What this study took into consideration is the population of an area compared to how much an area offers in 7 different entertainment categories. If an area only puts all their efforts into one area then it did come out with a lower rank.
I also don't listen at all to Syracuse.com forums or comments. Its seems like the people on there only want to complain, reading stuff like that gets old really fast.
It really just depends on your favorite form of entertainment. I prefer to go to a small gig (not many of those in syracuse) or go kayaking in the summer or snowboarding in the winter (plenty of it around CNY). Most of my weekends revolve around travelling somewhere or going to bars with my friends. I have no interest in gambling or having "entertainment" shoved down my throat after I've waited in line for it á la Orlando. I don't think I'd put Syracuse atop my fun list off the bat, but as someone who doesn't like canned entertainment, Vegas and Orlando hold zero appeal. Plus, last time I was in Vegas it felt like a pretend city, lots of big towers but no where to walk and no sense of an actual community.
I still think the study is a little bogus, those sorts of studies are too dependent on what kind of sample group they used and whatever measurement criteria the studier decided on. In this case, what "fun" is.

I am constantly barraged with notifications for shows at The Westcott, among many others through friends... I have no idea how they know about them. Punk shows, comedy shows, interactive-live audience comedy/radio show, classical, open "jam sessions"... Tantric was playing somewhere on Monday night- at some little place - I couldn't make it though... darn dinner at the parents, that night. :/ I'm hoping to catch Blue Oyster Cult in a few weeks.
Would it help if I asked my friends how they find out where all these things are? Besides the Westcott and Wise Guys (WAY revamped and in a new location, since you last lived here), *I* don't know where else I'd look... I can't make a tenth of what I'm invited to as it is, just between those two venues.
One thing I think that gets missed is accessibility to events. That's something I've noticed about more concentrated population areas (like Orlando, Miami, Philly, NYC, etc.) is that it isn't always feasible or very accessible for most regular people to go to events. Everything from parking, to the traffic, to the availability of tickets, etc. Sure there may be lots of events in those places to attend...but it isn't always likely that you'll be able to attend them just due to the massive amount of populations of those areas because the tickets are gone in minutes.
As others have said...it really depends on what you consider entertainment. All of the "usual" places that come to mind for fun tend to do a few things exceptionally well because people are willing to travel there just to do those things. But they dont necessarily do everything very well.
Once you've gone to Disney and Universial Studios five times, what else is there to do in Orlando, other than eat at Olive Garden or Applebee's?
