Onondaga County, NY Employment and Unemployment

Just a quick note about employment statistics. Do not put much faith in monthly employment statistics. They are just estimates. I only pay attention to the revised annual employment statistics.

New York State often over estimates the job growth in Syracuse to make it "seem" like the region is growing, when it fact it is still quite stagnant in job and population growth.

Default Job Growth in Metro Syracuse

Strangely enough, the number of jobs in the Syracuse MSA increased from 2006 to 2007.

Job Growth for the Syracuse MSA 1990 - 2007

1990 ~ 317,800
1995 ~ 307,800
2000 ~ 325,800
2005 ~ 321,100
2006 ~ 321,100
2007 ~ 323,400

In 2007, the Syracuse MSA increased 2,300 jobs over 2006.

Syracuse, NY Economy at a Glance

Another way to look at the above statistics.....almost 20 years later and the Syracuse MSA only has about 6,000 more jobs than it did in 1990....

This area is one that is in a transition state right now from being based more into manufacturing to being based more into services like health care, education and even some engineering. So, hopefully the change will bring about more positive results in the future.

ckhthankgod, you're right. Probably for that reason Syracuse is holding up better than other metros that held on to their manufacturing job base longer.

Great examples and I think people in our area need to get out more to see how it isn't as bad as it could be. While the area has seen better days on that front, it is at least going in the right direction. You provided information that shows that.

People seem to forget that SU isn't the only college that is growing or employing people in the area. Colgate, Caz. College, Wells College, Le Moyne, SUNY's like Morrisville, Oswego and the 2 Community Colleges in the metro have also provided jobs as well. Then, you have to think of other forms of higher or advanced education and even people that might live in the metro area that work at the campuses in the Ithaca area.

You have the hospitals expanding and employing people as wel. St. Joe's and Upstate come to mind in doing so. I believe Oswego's Hospital is as well. Oneida's Hospital might be as well.

Then you can't sleep on places like Syracuse Research Corporation, Sensis, Time Warner, Centro, Pomco, Lockheed Martin, Anaren/MS Kennedy, National Grid and many smaller businesses as well.

So, all is not lost in terms of the job market.
