looking for rural suburban syr town
I'm moving to Syracuse as soon as my home on Long Island is sold. My husband's job has already started and he is up in Onondaga. I will be traveling often to check out homes and towns. I don't want a Syracuse version of Long Island. I'm looking for a good home with an acre or so of land, with good views. No developments. I like to spend a lot of time outdoors with my Brittany Spaniel. Can anyone recommend some good affordable areas for us? We don't want to spend more than $225K on a house and hope this will eventually be our retirement home. Any info is sincerely appreciated. Thanks.

You should not have too much trouble finding a place to suit you. Depends on how close to Syracuse you need to be, but there are great rural areas all around. We moved to Pompey from Long Island last year and are very pleased. There are some developments around, but nothing like the Island. You can try Cazenovia, Pompey, or Jamesville to the east, or Lysander to the north. You should come up and check things out for yourself. I'm sure Bellafinzi will chime in with additional ideas.

Check out Lafayette or Tully. They're both rural, nice little quiet spots south of Syracuse that don't get as much snow as points north and west. There aren't any actual developments here from what I've seen and homes are very affordable.

Madison County
You may want to check out parts of Madison County which is just east of Onondaga.
Cazenovia, Chittenango, and Canastota are all close to Syracuse and would put you 20-30 mins from and major shopping malls.
I can put you in touch with a Realtor who knows the area if you want. Just let me know.
Would be glad to help.

I'd check out Camillus. West Genesee schools are great. LaFayette is definately out there, but very beautiful. Auburn, Elbridge and Skaneateles are nice. I saw a beautiful listing in Camillus today in Pioneer Farms or Sherwood farms..very nice.

All good suggestions so far.
Other places you may want to consider are Marcellus, Otisco, the rural part of the Town of Onondaga, and the rural part of Van Buren.

With that price you should have no problem finding what you want in the Syracuse area. What social activities do you and your husband enjoy? How comfortable are you with snow and all the issues that come with it? How far is he willing to drive each day? What do you like to do in your spare time? Where do you like to shop? These will give us a better idea of where to suggest you look.

According to what you are looking for I believe that Lafayette would be a great area to look into. It is quiet and has affordable homes (not to mention affordable taxes) with at least an acre of land in most of the homes for sale.
