Default EVERYTHING you need to know about Strathmore in the city of Syracuse

It seems like a lot of people are looking for information on how to have a great life in the City of Syracuse. This is information on a GREAT neighborhood in the city of Syracuse. Check it out if you want original homes with history and character and parks and clubs. Families that have lived here for generations and families that fill up entire streets.

Check out STRATHMORE!

The HOMES:
Strathmore is a fabulous neighborhood full of historic and beautiful homes. Many great architects have built homes in this neighborhood. You will find several original Ward Wellington Ward homes, arts and crafts bungalows, original built in Stickley cupboards, leaded glass windows and much more. There is so much character in the homes in Strathmore that there is an annual Tour of Historic and beautiful homes which draws 600-900 visitors each year.

The Schools:
Many neighbors walk to school at JT Roberts k-8 and Corcoran High School. Both schools have very active PTO organizations - Roberts had a spaghetti dinner/ resource fair last week that sold out. Corcoran is one of the only schools in the state that offers the International Baccalauriate program. Students can graduate from Corcoran with enough college credits to start college as a Junior. JT Roberts is planning on introducing an elementary IB program in the next 2 years.
The Bishops Accademy at Most Holy Rosary k-6 Catholic school.

The Social life:
Socially, Strathmore is beyond compare. There are MANY social organizations. There are a lot of young families in Strathmore, so we get together quite frequently. Strathmore historically has been known to be a very social neighborhood dating back to the early 1900's and the Ruskin Ave Tea Club.

For the guys: The Strathmore Mens Athletic Club meets monthly at Swallow's (bar) to discuss important stuff...really important stuff like politics and sports and...who knows what.

For the ladies:
The Margarita Moms: A network of 40-50 (and growing) young women in Strathmore who meet monthly at someone's home for social time and cocktails. The MM's organize the childrens Halloween Parade, The Firebarn Cafe and the Neighborhood Garage Sale.

Ladies Night Out:
Another all inclusive ladies gathering in Strathmore monthly for cocktails, socializing..all strathmore ladies are welcome.

For the politically minded:
The Greater Strathmore Neighborhood Association - Strathmore Neighborhood > The Neighborhood Association ( DNN 4.0.2 )

For the environmentalist:
The Onondaga Park Association

Athletes :
There are 2 womens indoor soccer teams year round and several pick up mens soccer games in the spring and summer. There is an annual neighborhood 5k race. There are several great running places in the neighborhood. Onondaga Park is just about 1 mile around the lake and the Woodland reservoir (the BEST views of the city) is about 3/4 mile around the track. there is also a beautiful 3 mil fottball/soccer field and track at Corcoran HS.
Swimming: Olympic sized pool at Onondaga park, Free swimming lessons for kids (city residents) in the summer

Churches:
Most Holy Rosary - boasts the longest aisle in the city. Cathedral style church and k-6 school.
Bellevue Heights Methodist Church - very active church chicken BBQ's and free bible school in the summer.

Parks - Onondaga Park surrounds Hiawatha Lake in the center of the Strathmore neighborhood. There is a beautiful gazebo on the water and a stone bridge surrounded by willow trees. This park was designed by the same architect that designed Central Park NYC. It is the most photographed park in the city (because all of the brides go there for their portraits.) Tennis courts, basketball courts, swimming pool, barbecue pits, mature trees, lake...it is our pride and joy.
Elmwood Park - Beautiful stream for wading, wooded nature trails for hiking, little league fields and playground. The schools like to use Elmwood park frequently for science activities. The stream runs behind Roberts school and the mature woods offer a great place for kids to learn, play and discover.

Events:

Art on the Porches - Art on the Porches Home Page
40-60 artists show and sell their work on the front porches of the historic homes on Ruskin Ave. Street festival, music, food, poetry, crafts for kids.(This event is free)
The Parks Run- 5k race and kids run to benefit Sarah House (for visiting extended hospital stay families) Run through Onondaga, Elmwood and the Woodland reservoir.
Meet the Candidates Night - Each November during an election. All candidates for all public local and county offices come and speak to neighbors and answer questions from neighbors.
Recommended Vendor trade show - Neighbors recommend home improvement specialists to each other. Those companies that are recommended are invited to participate in a trade show that is advertised to neighbors. Discounts on services are offered.
The Strathmore by the Park Tour of Homes - Held on the same day as Art on the Porches. Tour 5 strathmore homes. Pre tour party, silent auction ($)
The Father Daughter Dance - Held annually at Most Holy Rosary. Dads and their daugters spend this very special night dressing up, dancing and winning great raffle prizes. Portrait included.

Well...I think I've covered most of it...I know that I left out some great stuff like concerts in the park by the Syracuse Symphony every Tuesday night in July and Christmas in Strathmore, the snowman making contest, the great triple hill for sledding (you can imagine), Corcoran HS friday night football games under the lights (neighbors all walk up).The Tons of neighborhood kids and the friends that they become for life. The diversity that they experience in the schools and in the neighborhood....We love it here and we live here because we want to..not everyone wants a big new house in a brand new quiet suburb away from the city...some of us want something a little better than that.
