Like Ann Arbor? Sounds great.
When looking for real estate for these particular areas, do they refer to them by these neighborhood names or by the school district? I tried to find some houses for sale in Berkley but couldn't find any.
Thanks CKH!

Most of those would fall under Syracuse City School District; what might be more useful (although obviously not completely limiting by neighborhood) is some zip codes to search on (realtor.com, at least, lets you search by zip code).
Berkeley Park, Westcott/University, and Outer Comstock make up most of 13210. Parts of Meadowbrook are in that as well, although most is in 13224.
Eastwood: 13206. Sedgwick: Mostly 13203, some 13206.
Price is often a good indicator, in those neighborhoods, as to desirability of location. A house in Sedgwick in the preservation area will start upwards of $120k, while a block away could go down to the upper $80s or so. (13203, FWIW, covers a lot of rough areas on the north side too - so be careful )

How far is Pompey from Syracuse?

I'd say 10 miles... my dad used to work at Carrier in East Syracuse, which is several miles past the nearest Syracuse City limits, and it was 13 miles, door to door. (And we lived further out than most.) A good rule of thumb is that it takes 15-20 minutes to get to any side of Syracuse from Pompey. If you live nearer to Jamesville though, it's only about 5 miles.

Thanks Proulx...only 10 min? Wow! How does Pompey keep it's lovely countryside when it's so close to a city? I looked at some houses for sale in Pompey today...not too many to choose from..but I'll keep looking.

Also, if you want country, but with some more affordable homes, try the Baldwinsville area. It is a nice area, that is kind of to itself, but still close to Syracuse.
As far as affordable suburbs, try Mattydale, Nedrow, the Galeville area of Liverpool, North Syracuse, much of the East Syracuse area(Park Hill, Franklin Park and some neighborhoods in the village) and the Solvay area. Some parts look better than others, but for the most part, are safe.

Thanks a bunch CHK. We are living in farm country now, because of our two Morgan horses. When we make this next move, our dear horses won't be coming with us. Only our beloved dogs and one smarty-pants cat. We would LOVE to have a large fenced yard if we live in a neighborhood...if we buy in the outer, country areas, then we'll be fine with that too..our dogs are elderly.
I would like to live closer to an urban area for the closeness of everything...but it needs to be safe..most importantly.

You might like houses in 13215(the Onondaga Hill area in the town of Onondaga). I grew up in that area and the yards are pretty big, but the area is close to the city of Syracuse. Westvale might be another area you might like. That's in zip 13219, as is Fairmount. I forgot about Lyncourt as another affordable suburb close to the city.
