As an African-American former CNY resident, I would argue the "class" and "ethnicity" are bigger issues in the Syracuse area than "race." Like everywhere else these days, it's about what you can afford. The only problem with the suburbs is that the number of blacks is very small so there is a chance of feeling isolated but honestly white people in CNY tend to rate you more on your profession, social group, religion and ethnicity. A lot will depend on whether you are Catholic, or not and your wife being Jamaican is a plus, quite frankly--most interracial couples I see in CNY involve a West Indian spouse. Interracial couples in CNY tend to "blend in" and seem not to be pressed about race.

While not huge, parts of suburban towns/communities like Clay, Salina, DeWitt and Nedrow in the town of Onondaga have areas where the Black percentage is around the national percentage(if not higher depending who you include). There are "visible" amounts in parts of some other towns as well. As mentioned before in the thread, Fairmount, East Syracuse and Nedrow have churches that worship out of the African American tradition and other suburban churches may have substantial Black members like Abundant Life in East Syracuse and Believers Chapel in Cicero(its pastor is Black and they have other locations in the area. Canastota and Auburn also have said churches. So, there are Black residents outside of Syracuse in varying degrees, if you know where to look.

Also, there are interracial couples that involve African Americans and Africans in the area as well. I'd say that it is more the previous of the two than anything else.
