The Syracuse St. Patrick's Parade
The Syracuse St. Patrick's Parade is today at noon in Downtown. Channel 9 (9WSYR) broadcasts it live every year. St. Patricks Parade - NewsChannel 9 WSYR
Syracuse's media claims it's the largest St. Patrick's Parade per capita in the Country! Can anyone verify this?
To Syracuse this Parade signals the unofficial end of winter...just like the NY State Fair in Syracuse signals the unofficial end of summer---- even though warm weather lasts a few more weeks after the Fair.

Sorry. Savannah, Georgia has the largest St. Patrick's Day Parade on a per capita basis, and Scranton, Pennsylvania, my hometown, comes in second. I believe Syracuse is in the Top 10 though.

Thanks! I had a feeling Syracuse's Parade wasn't #1. For some reason there are many locals who still believe Syracuse is a "small town". Probably why they assumed ours was the largest St. Patrick's Day Parade on a per capita basis....

My guess is that they might mean the longest procession of people and performers, and I had heard that "biggest in the country" line in reference to Syracuse before.
I don't doubt that Scranton has a huge parade. If I were to judge on general Irishness not on March 17th, Scranton would win. My real question is, who measures these things?
A quick search on Wikipedia says Syracuse has the biggest parade per capita and Savannah had the largest unofficial attendance, 750,000 people. It says Scranton has the third-largest celebration in the country.
Last time I checked Scranton was way smaller than Syracuse, so I don't know how both those statements could be true.

Thanks kmbell. Interesting info.
Great weather this year! The forecast for tomorrow's parade is mid 40s and sunny in Syracuse.

Today isn't even St Patrick's Day proper. So that means everyone in Syracuse will go out and get drunk at the parade. Then they will continue drinking on Sunday, another weekend day; then, to get over their hangovers they will drink more on Monday; and then on Tuesday the 17th, the SERIOUS drinking will start...
